Home-reared meat, a hay bale for kids, pizzas in the garden, real ales by the fire, an organic philosophy and a love of real food.

Passionately organic, delightfully unpreachy. In 2005 the simple pub in the idyllic village was taken on by farmer Helen Browning and has been flying the flag ever since. There's food bartering with locals, a wild garden, an outdoor pizza oven and a barbecue, open days with hay bales for kids to romp on, and pig races and live music in summer. The planked, beamed open-plan bar has mismatched furniture and a roaring fire and the staff are friendly. But best of all is the menu that changes twice a day: crayfish from the Thames served with Bishopstone watercress, home-cured bacon from home-reared pigs, asparagus from Lotmead down the road, fish from the boats out of Newlyn, gooseberries from the garden. Perfect ingredients, perfect food, beer from Arkells and six wines by the glass.

Local points of interest from
Helen Browning & Tim Finney:

  • Circular walks to The Ridgeway National Trail that runs across our (tenanted) 1,400 acre organic farm start from our front door.
  • Our farm boundaries to the south give access to thousands more acres of open land, criss-crossed with paths and bridleways, and the glories of pre-historic Wiltshire and Oxfordshire lie all around us.
  • Our Pig Racing Festival is held here annually in May or June. Ten great pigs, one trainer, on line betting, road closures, and beer; a great mix for an entertaining (English) day out. As many as 600 people will give up their Sunday to watch this farce!
