Charming thatched village pub serving up wholesome dishes and a fine selection of ales. Good walking and Stonehenge is 15 mins by car

When The Swan was threatened with closure the locals rallied and bought it, now Pete and Emma run it with unpretentious charm. They’ve struck a happy balance with regular events for villagers and a welcoming atmosphere for anyone (and their dog) who stops for sustenance. Pete’s usually busy in the kitchen turning out wholesome dishes: homemade pies, chilli con carne, chicken Kiev. Produce is locally sourced, meat comes from nearby farms and most of the real ales (there are usually five on offer) come from local breweries. The building itself is Grade II listed, old photos on the walls nod to its history, with an attractive thatched roof and outside a lawned garden, terrace for seating and a pretty orchard. Inside there’s a quiet buzz with well fed diners sitting at mismatched tables and chairs, locals propping up the bar and a dog snoozing by the fire.
