The Durham Ox - Pub in Yorkshire
Westway
Crayke, York, YO61 4TE, Yorkshire
England,
United Kingdom
Find this cosy pub at the picturesque top of the Grand Old Duke of York’s hill – it’s the heart of the village. There’s a lot of space to enjoy - sit outside in the beer garden, sample one of their locally brewed gins in the bar with a board-game or book the private dining room with its own pre-dinner sitting area and log burner. Food is excellent – classic British from fresh, local ingredient; try queenie scallops followed by cauliflower and cumin fritters with roasted monkfish. Rich sunken chocolate tart makes an irresistible pudding. Sunday roasts are inevitably popular. There’s plenty for vegans too. There are great walks straight from the door; in and around the village, or a very short car journey away, taking in lots of beautiful countryside - bring the dog too.

Michael & Sasha Ibbotson:
- Historic York - so much to see and do for all ages. Yorvic, the Minster, the old City Walls, ghost walks, Medieval Banqueting Halls; The National Railway Museum (free of charge) Betty's team rooms; River boat tours. Lots of independent shops & galleries
- The Durham Ox is on the first hill after the Vale of York...and so you can see the hilltop village for miles. The pub is in the centre of the village and looks up the hill to the Church. This is where The Grand Old Duke marched his men up and down!
- History galore in this 300 year old pub in the picturesque village of Crayke & a great base to visit so many other historic properties with masses of National Trust and English Heritage Sites all around. Byland Abbey, Beningborough & Nunnington Halls etc.
- Castle Howard - think 'Brideshead Revisited'...for those who are familiar with the television drama - otherwise notably an iconic country house complete with follies, fountains, lakes & an adventure playground. Also, farmshop and garden nursery. Beautiful
- There's a wonderful circular walk, The Crayke Estate Walk, which is perfect pre or post lunch. There are also plenty of beautiful longer walks in the area as well as amazing cycle routes. So whether whether for a refreshing drink or food, do pop in.
- The moors and coast are easily accessible...and how about a stop on the way in the lovely market town of Helmsley. Then drive on to Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes, Runswick, Scarborough....your choice....or stop in Pickering for the Moors Railway....
