Walk, ride, bike or canoe your way through the Beacons, head to book heaven in Hay, return to a sofa by the fire and delicious Aga cooking

It's quirky, homespun, utterly intoxicating and thrives on a mix of relaxed informality and colourful style. The timber-framed bar resembles the sitting room of a small hip country house, with sofas in front of a fire that burns on both sides and backgammon waiting to be played. Painted stone walls throughout come in blocks of colour. An open-plan feel sweeps you through to the restaurant, where stock pots simmer on an Aga; try hake fillet with pernod cream, pheasant rillette, Eve's pudding with cinnamon custard, all of it delicious. A road passes outside, quietly at night, lanes lead into the hills, and a small organic kitchen garden provides much for the table. The Beacons are close, so walk, ride, bike, canoe – or head to Hay for books galore.

"We visited the felin fach Griffin while on holiday in Wales and had such a great meal. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious, and was beautiful to look at too. The wine was delicious (and the boys enjoyed their ales)! The staff were the perfect balance of friendly and professional and we would definitely go back. "

"Something special definitely going on here. Absolutely superb food, top quality service and warm welcome for dogs & children. Best Sawday's recommendation we've visited in the past 2 years; even knocks our usual North Norfolk haunts for six. Our 9 yr old son's verdict (& our's) - 5 stars!"
