In the centre of Hatfield Broad Oak is a local loved not only for its great ales but also its food. Inside in the bar, cosy with cottage windows and wood-burning stoves, ales (Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor's Landlord) are on tap. At scrubbed wood tables you can tuck into Justin's hearty menus: crispy oriental duck salad with warm udon noodles; bubble and squeak with bacon, poached egg and hollandaise; Doom Bar beer battered Brixham haddock with thrice cooked chips and pea purée. One law that should be made here is to leave space for pudding. Justin's pastry-training produces elaborate treats. Try honeycomb parfait with chocolate 'soil', toffee pudding slice and popcorn, accompanied by an extensive pudding wine list. There's also a conservatory dining room for groups and a lovely garden in summer, where chickens cluck as contentedly as the guests.
