Ten-mile views, legendary roasts and cool interiors at this beautifully renovated Victorian pub above Bath, looking across the city to Solsbury Hill. A conservatory, decked terrace, sprawling garden and a vast mullioned window in the bar all face the right way – you gaze out over fields and hills. You might find goat's cheese and honey terrine, beer-battered haddock and hand-cut chips, dark chocolate mousse and clementine purée. At the bar, traditionally brewed Butcombe and Hare & Hounds Ale stand side by side, backed up by excellent wines, many available by the glass. The pub is open all day, breakfast is served from 8am during the week and from 9am at weekends. There's a fire in the bar, a separate menu for children, and a private dining room for small parties. Perfectly located for those travelling to or from the M4 to the north of Bath. Gorgeous.

Local points of interest from
Chris Martin:

  • Sitting high above Bath, the pub has gorgeous views over the Charlcombe valley and surrounding countryside. No matter what time of year, the view is simply stunning – we never tire of it!
  • Look out across the valley from the pub and you’ll see Solsbury Hill, site of an old iron age fort but more famously the inspiration for local songwriter and musician, Peter Gabriel’s song of the same name.
  • We’re blessed with plenty of gorgeous countryside on the pub’s doorstep – with loads of footpaths to explore it with just a stone’s throw from the pub. Being up high, many of the walks give fabulous views over the surrounding countryside.
  • A short walk from the pub, you’ll find Beckford’s Tower a grade I listed architectural folly built by local figure, William Beckford. From the top, you can see for miles. Beckford was the richest commoner in the land and is buried there.
  • For battlefield geeks, we’ve got the site of the English Civil War’s battle of Lansdown a couple of miles up the road.
  • Fancy a flutter? Bath racecourse is just a mile up the road
