The
Experience

The apartments are set in a whitewashed house in the old town, and although you’re in the thick of things it’s quieter once you’ve shut the door to the street. There’s an authentic Spanish feel to them both: Casa Alta is slightly larger and has a fireplace and herb garden, but both have good kitchens: coffee, tea, herbs and spices in the larder; a welcome bottle of cava and fruit. Gaze out from your terrace onto panoramic views of the Almanzora Valley, and beyond it the sea.All you need is close – shops, restaurants, the bustling town square. Wander the narrow streets, catch a bus to the beach or walk down in 45 minutes. It’s less than 15 minutes’ drive to the next town, Garrucha, where you can find excellent seafood at the fishing port; the same distance to the spectacularly wild and arid Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Moorish old town of Mojácar is a typical pueblo blanco, with narrow winding streets, colourful hanging flowers and quaint whitewashed houses. The town’s atmospheric main square, Plaza Nueva, is around the corner: here you’ll find a choice of bars and restaurants as well as spectacular views of the Valley of the Pyramids - climb further up to La Plaza Mirador del Castillo for even better ones. Sights include the 16th-century Santa María Church, which resembles a fortress and was most likely once a mosque, and the public fountain near the Plaza del Flores, where the Moors negotiated a surrender to the Catholics in 1488.

Local points of interest from Ginés Llamas Martinez

  • Mojácar impresses you at a distance, the majestic assortment of white houses, winding around imposing to the traveller. Once inside the labyrinth, you discover a more intimate beauty between the stand out against the white walled houses and the blue sea.
  • Parque Natural Cabo de Gata extends approximately five hundred square kilometres and includes one hundred and twenty square kilometres of the sea as a marine reserve. An area of special protection, the park is home to a wealth of wildlife and rare plants.
  • Garrucha offers a little light relief from the typical tourist attractions of the Costa Almeria, allowing the visitor to experience traditional Spanish life. Situated in the Province of Almeria, Garrucha is a traditional Spanish fishing town.
