The Experience

Recline among the broom and mimosa in your hammock on one of the wilder surfing coastlines of Spain. Casas Karen feels like a cluster of a village with an unhurried feel, in an eco-friendly garden between pinewoods, sand dunes and beach (a ten-minute walk for most). While the overall feel is rustic, all the houses have their own privacy and are cosy and comfortable, with bright flowing fabrics and stylish local touches. Local here means Andalucían and Moroccan: the mountains of the Magreb are visible on clear days. Many have open fires for winter and the airy and environmentally sustainable ‘chozas’ – houses made of thatch – are sweet and romantic. The place attracts an interesting clientele (artists, lawyers, surfers) and the open laid-back atmosphere is ideal for the more adventurous traveller. Massage, yoga, therapies and life coaching can be arranged and there’s walking, riding, biking and much more, too; Karen and Juani will happily advise. Come for the vibe and don’t be put off by Caños itself, a one-time celebrated hang-out for hippies, now decidedly shabby around the edges.

Reviews

We stayed in one of the white stone cottages with our dog. The house was clean and well equipped and had good internet connection. We found the staff at Casas Karen very pleasant and helpful. The collection of houses are within walking distance of beautiful beaches, and there are lovely walks also up the hills behind the houses. Ideal for dogs. There are restaurants and bars down by the beach, within 10 minutes' walk, and there are nice towns within 20 mins drive. We had a guided tour around the other 7 or 8 Casas and they also looked lovely, so the collection would accommodate a large group.

We came to Casas Karen intending to stay for 1 week in the Estudio Trafalgar. We fell in love with with place and ended up staying for 2 weeks. We loved its simplicity, its peace and its cats! Karen and her helpers were great and the location is a short walk to one of the glorious beaches of the Costa de la Luz.

We were the third time in Casas Karen and it will be not our last time. We love this wonderful place in this beautyful nature, very friendly people, nice houses in a ecological garden, not far from the beach.

We loved staying at Casas Karen . The location is ideal , very quiet and set in lovely, tranquil outdoor green space with easy access to walks in the forest but also only 5 minutes from the beach at Canos de Meca. We stayed in Casa Karen 2 for the second time in December which is spacious, comfortable and well designed in Andalusian/Moorish style . There is a nice area in front of the house for sitting in the sun . Will definitely go here again .

Casas Karen is a magical place that we have visited many times over the years with family and friends. The setting is idyllic, set back a short way from the beach Casas Karen has a bohemian, rustic feel to it with pretty gardens, the lovely 'chozas' (traditional thatched cottages) to stay in, and is a quiet, peaceful space to chill out in a hammock. We've stayed there in high season and during the winter and always had a great time.

So sad that due to the Covid 19 pandemic we won't be able to spend a couple of weeks at Casas Karen this June as we have done each year for many years now. It's such a lovely place. Great location and an idyllic setting. Attractive, nicely furnished , well equipped accommodation. Relaxed and relaxing atmosphere. Warm welcome always. When travel restrictions are lifted we'll be back.

Local points of interest from Karen Abrahams

  • One of the least spoiled and most spectacular coastlines in Spain. A rather pretty seaside village arranged along the cliff tops with one of the most unspoiled beaches in Andalucía just a 5-10 minute walk away.
  • The Trafalgar lighthouse separates the main bay of Caños from the more open water of the Atlantic (a sublime place to watch the sunset).Watch whales and dolphins migrate through the straits of Gibraltar between April and October
  • The area itself is famous for its surfing, swimming and deep-sea-diving, and breathtaking countryside is perfect for walks, bicycle-tours and horse-riding through the hills and meadows of the Natural Park of the Breña y Marismas del Barbate.
  • A variety of restaurants and bars nearby, and a short drive away in breathtaking white hilltop villages like Vejer de frontera, and in special secret places, next to waterfalls and natural springs.
  • 5 minutes walk from Casas Karen, Local Organic Farmer´s market, fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, fresh pasta, cheese, homemade cakes, and more… Sessions of the Work of Byron Katie available.
  • You can practice Yoga, Qi-Gong and Krav Maga with our in-house teachers. We're open to exchanges, please get in touch if you're interested. We also have special rates for longer Winter stays, come and stay for a few months out of season!
