The
Experience

As you laze on the roof terrace you gaze on Morocco – an unparalleled view. With energy and flair Zoë has created a corner of “her spiritual home” in Tarifa. Handsome Dar Cilla (once a ruin) was built against the 12th-century town wall and wraps its exquisite self around two patios. The studios and apartments are truly lovely – wafer bricks, sienna-washed plaster, polished stucco, illuminated nooks and crannies and kilims on terracotta; the finish is superb. You get bedrooms and dining/sitting areas, shower rooms and kitchenettes in a rustic-chic, low-key Arab-Andaluz style, dotted with decorative features and fabrics that English Zoë has picked up on trips to Tangier. A stunning new loft apartment with views tempts you across the Straights. No sitting room but an amazing roof terrace, cosy and convivial with loungers, lanterns and open shower. No meals, but cafés for breakfast and a good restaurant a stroll away. Surf the golden beaches of the wind-surfing capital of Europe, gallop in pine forests, dip into the bars of the old, labyrinthine town – or do that ferry hop to Morocco.

Reviews

Wonderful aparments in the middle of Tarifa. Ours was for two people and was perfect.Rooftop terrace with great views of Africa. Met the owner,Zoe, up there one night and she was charm personified.Tarifa is a quirky town but grew on us during our stay. Highly reccomended!

A fab place - right outside the Old Town walls. Unassumingly stylish, comfortable and with a lovely, convivial roof terrace with views across to Morocco (when the wind allows!). Staff are lovely, helpful and deeply knowledgeable about Tarifa and the area's hidden corners.

Local points of interest from Zoë Ouwehand-Reid & Martina de Rijke

  • The coast here (Costa de La Luz) is known as a HIGH WIND area and is one of the world’s hot spots for KITE SURFING and WIND SURFING. Tarifa was virtually ‘discovered’ by the first generation of wind surfers in their caravans some 25 years ago.
  • It is still a surfers’ paradise but is pretty much a paradise in general – riding, (mountain) biking, paddle boarding, bird watching, shopping, eating, scenic drives – and of course beach walking and just beach ‘bumming’.
  • A day in Tangier. Morocco is so near (nearly within spitting distance of your olive stones, as one guest put it) that most of our Dar Cilla visitors take advantage of the tour we organize for them with our private guide.
  • WHALE WATCHING is very special (providing the wind is not too strong). Excellent small boats with professional and knowledgeable guides take you across the Strait as this is where the currents suit the dolphins and the whales.
