The
Experience

Lounge on the roof terrace overlooking the trees; swim long laps in the pool. This beautiful beach house has been built to perfection… and you can hear the surf from the garden.

To say the house is fully equipped is an understatement. Electric shutters control breeze and shade, French windows glide, a fountain plays by the palms on the inner patio. Take drinks to front balconies and gaze out to sea: airy bedrooms cut across two of three floors, and there’s a chill-out terrace at the top.

Roche is a leafy residential area strolling distance from the sea: a small supermarket, a few bars, pools hidden between the trees. Head for Conil (10km) for tapas at El Mirlo, or ocean-fresh tuna. It’s worth going a bit further to the port of Barbate to eat at El Campero. For birds, you have the sea marshes; for culture, wonderful Cadiz.

Reviews

If I ever wanted a beach holiday with an extended family or friends, this is the place I would choose. Total luxury without being over the top, a minute walk to the beach and best of all: you can hear the surf from the house!

Location

The neighbourhood

On the edge of peaceful residential Roche, the sea dominates, while the surrounding land is flat and full of pines. On this wild, lesser known stretch of Atlantic coast, the beaches are superb and surf lessons can be organised in or out of season. It's a short walk to Urbanización Roche’s basic bar and shop; however, the 8km-long beach is scattered with small bars (‘chiringuitos') in season. Conil's shops and restaurants are a 10-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Andrew Platt

  • 20 mins to the hilltop village of Vejer (fabulous restaurants, bars, galleries, jazz, and flamenco); 30 mins to Cadiz (history, and Carnival in February); 40 mins to Jerez (bodegas and Spring Fair in May); and 45 minutes to Tarifa (and the boat to Tangiers
  • Watch the whales in the Strait (trips from Barbate and Tarifa) or take a private boat to watch the Almadraba (capture of the tuna).
  • Take an evening horse ride through the pine forest, canter in the surf, drink a cold fino at the beach bar, and back to the stables before lights-out....what better way to finish the day!
  • The Costa de la Luz is famous for its beaches, and you have one of the best right on your doorstep. Surf classes can be organised here. Also worth exploring: Cape Trafalgar, Bolonia, and Tarifa (for windsurf).
  • There are many good walks and bike rides: along the cliffs to Conil, through the pine forest, the national park above Cape Trafalgar, or serious mountain walking at Grazalema. Bike hire can be arranged
  • The magic of Seville is 90 minutes away. The white villages of Vejer and Medina Sidonia are closer and make a lovely evening trip with dinner after. The Roman ruins of Baelo Claudio are spectacular, and Tangier is an hour on the boat from Tarifa

Introducing

Andrew Platt

The property is manged by Andrew Platt, who has run his letting agency since 2006. He lives in the same ‘urbanización’ with his Spanish wife, and they could not be more helpful. Their aim is to help others discover the wonderful and relatively undeveloped areas of Spain that he and his young family love.
