The Experience

Just the place for adventurous fans of Moorish magic. Follow shoestring lanes through the dramatic Alpujarras to Tom and Carmen’s ancient village houses… and be amazed.

You step into a kaleidoscope of rooms and passages with tapestries, photos, puppets; a granite meditation chair, antique baths, a squat loo… you may sleep in beds from Carmen’s childhood; relax in the jewel of a solar-heated pool – with its current machine and steam room – in the sheltered, flower-filled patio between the houses.

Go wild swimming, biking, riding. Detailed maps and advice help you hike to your heart’s content: along Moorish trails linking seven local villages, the GR7 and up on Spain’s highest mountain, Mulhacén. Book a massage for your return, have a meal brought over or wander to the village restaurant for divine food slow cooked over a cauldron.

I was wonderfully amazed by Casa Aloe. A deserted alleyway in a small attractive village, and ordinary front door and suddenly one walks into a fairy tale home, an amazing creation with meticulous care for detail. So many small passages and secret rooms that it would take a whole week to get ones bearings. And the added luxury of having a steam room and pool with natural water to sooth ones muscles after a long walk in this beautiful part of Spain.

Casa Aloe was a truly unique escape. I have stayed in many house rentals over the last 10 years or so, and this one is probably my favorite! The house itself is oozing with charm and character. The terrace is so nice that I spent most of my time out there reading, writing, admiring the view, taking in the sun. The town itself is very small and quiet allowing complete peace and serenity at the house. There are many walking/hiking trails just 3 minutes from the house itself. Tom and Carmen were very kind and quick to respond to my emails. It's easy to see the love they have put into this home.

Casa Aloe is wonderfully and beautifully eccentric - every room is unique with its own distinctive rustic charm. The patio is wonderful - we spent many hours sitting under the vine and soaking in the amazing mountain views from sunrise to exquisite sunset. When we did venture out from the house then we loved the local area. There are several small villages within a couple of miles, and they have a surprising number of bars and restaurants. All in all, we really enjoyed our week away from it all in Casa Aloe and we were very sorry to leave.

Beautifully renovated traditional house in friendly village. The views are outstanding. The house has everything you need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The pool is a great added bonus. I haven’t any negative things to say about the house, the location or the friendly people. It was a memorable holiday.

Local points of interest from Carmen Adams

  • Enjoy the cultural experience of an Andalusian village whilst having the peace and quiet of a rural retreat if you wish. We are surrounded by 7 villages, all connected via glorious walks, all have fiestas in Winter and Summer too, and lots of history.
  • There's an excellent restaurant in our village, and great restaurants and bars in our valley, where the tradition is to give a free "tapa" (plates of food specialities) with every drink, and where often you can catch an evening of local music.
  • The pool is electrically heated and solar. To purify the water we use is sand and salt, so your skin and eyes will be treated kindly here. It has also a hydro-massage and swimming against the current system so that you can exercise and feel revitalised.
  • The National Park is just behind us.There are in the house, as well as other suggestions, a collection of maps with exciting detailed walks via the moorish paths and we can point you in the right direction for unforgettable walks with incredible views.
  • There are local people that provide a number of interesting activities, like flamenco classes, horse riding, yoga, Chi kung, specialised walks, etc. also there's a tennis court not far. Perfect for mountain biking.Any other interests please let us know.
  • The village is car free, and a haven for children games. We have many toys, and a large dolls house, sylvanians, games, lego, books, a trycicle, a toddlers pool (movable 150cm round), cuddleys...and a room off the kitchen where the small ones can play.

Carmen Adams

Artists Tom and Carmen have spent many years renovating these adjoining, higgledy-piggledy, 700-year-old houses – every alcove in every metre-thick stone wall, every chestnut beam and slate tile, every quirky, personal detail – to hugely atmospheric effect. Their love of the Alpujarra, its communities, snow-fed rivers and magnificent mountain backdrop inspires their creativity. When they are away, helpful Matilde is on hand for guests.
