Tennis, pool, trails and soaring views for these traditional-but-new houses on an olive farm. A gorgeous warm décor... remote and enchanting

Read guest comments

Remote and enchanting. A sea of almonds, olives, figs and vines, a soaring outlook over a mountainous flank to the Mediterranean and across to Africa, and a gregarious Scottish gentleman keen to share this special spot: rural Alpujarra meets Scots eccentricity. Three traditional new-built houses (red roofs, chestnut beams, terracotta floors) nestle among the farm's almond groves, awash with objects reminiscent of life among landed gentry. Find old books and hat stands, paintings of horses, dogs, loch landscapes, a smattering of antiques, proper crockery and silver service in the open-plan kitchen dining room. (Stock up on food before arriving; and note Simon can provide the farm's olive oil and wine.) The houses may be unusual – and brilliant for holidays and house parties – but outside is even better. You get a large pool (ozone-filtered, no chlorine) with vast panoramic views, a tennis court, a boules pitch, barbecues, walking trails, a restaurant at the end of the track, beaches within a short drive, and horse riding nearby. Oh, and a helipad should you wish to arrive in style. A place to stretch and yawn.

"A very relaxed, beautiful and welcoming place. Plenty of delicious organic wine grown on vines you can see from your balcony. Very comfortable accommodation too. "

"An unforgettable experience in a simply stunning rural location well off the beaten track. Make sure to arrive loaded up with provisions (incl plenty of bread which you can freeze) and then sit back and relax enjoying Simon's own wine and natural spring water that's just outside the door. Lovely walks, tennis, table tennis and archery will keep even the most active children fully occupied with a refreshing dip in the pool all with the backdrop of beautiful hills and mountains beyond. The nearest road is some way back along a twisty and at times steep track so look forward to a peaceful time."

"If you are up for the relatively remote location this is paradise. Simon has created a Shangri-la at the end of 5 kms of rough track: a beautiful spot with great facilities (inc. a most lovely pool). The three homes that he has built in traditional style contain all that you need, except that you should bring your own food. However, Simon cooks a meal to remember (several in fact) and offers you his home grown wine and olive oil. If you want to get right away from it all - no lights, no traffic - you could not do better than this. A marvellous week (except for awful Brexit vote)."

"We met up with our best friends Jeff & Coleen while we were in Spain at this idyllic place and not really knowing what to expect, our host Simon was the most perfect host and Phan was the most amazing cook and person. The place was just so special and THE most relaxing place on earth. Simon you must be so proud of what you have achieved there, so thank you to you both for making our visit so special. PS I forgot to mention that Jeff and I can't wait to get our names on the archer's trophy! Well done Simon and a big thank you. Kelly and Anne Wardhaugh "

"And just when we thought life couldn't get any better - it did!! What a find. This is a truly magical place - a wonderful retreat to enjoy with good friends. Swimming, tennis, archery, to name just a few of the activities if the mood takes you - or just relax on the most amazing terrace with a good book and a glass of Simon's fine vino!! This place is so utterly charming alongside our host Simon who provided us with delicious food and vino from his own land. Wonderful memories have been made at Cortijo de la Jarilla- thank you Simon"

"We opened the car door, escaped the air-conditioning & stepped into this heavenly spot, for the second time this year, just too good & too beautiful to be true. Thank you again, so very much, for your welcome & endless kindness. We adore La Jarilla & its atmosphere & have loved this stay as much, if not more, than last time. "

"Incredible, the end of the world isn’t even 4 kms. away from the main road !. We had a super cycling holiday with magnificent nature, great views, very good food & house wine, real silence & a place to nest. "

"La Jarilla is a magical off the beaten track adventure to total paradise. Simon is a wonderful host & helped create unforgettable memories for the short break Mark & I had together. He has created one of the most special places I've ever had the fortune to visit - mountain magic with views of the ocean complete with all you need for the perfect holiday - a beautiful pool (with its own kitchen), a tennis court, boules pitch, even a spot for some archery amongst the vineyard and much much more. Simon's winetasting experience & 3 course dinner delight is a must, & star gazing,WOW! THANK V MUCH xx"

"Wonderful home built by the tenacious Simon and his team of expert builders / restorers. Authentic buildings, stunning mountain scenery, and plenty of distraction with tennis, swimming, petanque and much more. Taste the delicious olive oil, almonds and wine all made on the estate. Recommended for large family or group bookings as a real retreat - far far from the maddening crowds. Blissful."

"La Jarilla is the most stunning, peaceful, relaxing and restorative spot that we have ever been lucky enough to stumble upon on our travels. The views and landscape are breathtaking. Once through the front door, the interior is elegant, clean, homely and cosy. All the small details one wishes for away from home are here. The owners attention to detail in construction and finishing of this wonderful homestay just makes La Jarilla the most perfect retreat. And as an added bonus there's delicious 'homemade' olive oil and wine to enjoy straight from the surrounding land."
