The road climbs up, the ground falls away until, suddenly, somewhere between the earth and the sky, you’ve arrived. This low-lying, Alpujarran slate cortijo seems to grow out of the stony southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada on which it is perched. The view is vast: Alpujarra mountains, white villages, Órgiva. Energy comes from the sun, water from the Sierra. Each bedroom, opening onto a private terrace, shares the panorama. Interiors are sharp and clean-cut (like the air) with a mostly white colour scheme that is spiked with bright Indian fabrics, Moroccan lampshades, modern art. Bathrooms are crisply contemporary. Simply chic, yet cool and restful, this is a place to recharge batteries. No TVs, no phones, just a spacious, terraced garden with a bounteous orchard, large pool and private corners to read or snooze. Feeling active? Hiking and riding are on the doorstep, Granada and the beach are an hour away. Return to excellent home-produced dinners, and stargazing from the terrace. Well-travelled English owners John and Orna fell in love with the area and now they happily share it.
