Wave goodbye to ‘expat land’ for undulating lanes and fincas fringing the road, and a long bumpy-ish track that leads to the gates of La Careza. Here live friendly, generous Laurence and Marc, in a super-chic, architect-designed property with three guest dwellings on the ground floor, and two more in an old farm building. Think neat, compact, soothing and cocooning! In well-tended, well-irrigated gardens, tropical with olives, palms, lemon trees and mimosa, smart pebbled paths edged with succulents lead to the studios. They are stylish, rustic, individual and beautiful, with dappled patios, super showers, good wifi. (Note ‘Yolo’ has the largest kitchen, and a winter fire.) In the round house next to ‘Gaudi’ is a communal tower with an honesty fridge and a stair to a wraparound terrace from which you can gaze on Mijas and the sea. There are restaurants and bars in La Cala de Mijas, and a delightful ‘venta’ a stroll down the hill. Lounge on the lawns, splash in the pool, watch dusk’s shadows move across the mountains.
