In the hills of the interior above Malaga, at the heart of the village of Cartajima, lies this large, light townhouse. Off the beaten tourist track, peace pervades, a gentle breeze bringing in fresh mountain air. Di and John have created an airy retreat full of welcoming spaces and quirky corners; escape the sun in the cool entrance and lounge, or snuggle down with a book in front of the fire in winter. Bedrooms come in different shapes, but all have tiled floors, colourful rugs and throws, comfy rocking chairs and neat en-suites, two with tubs. There are balconies, too, with little Moorish tables and chairs and heavenly views over the village. Up top, take evening drinks on the roof terrace with its tiled fountain – paddling permitted! A ‘fusion’ breakfast is served in the dining room and dinner is available on request: Di only cooks for her guests so let her know in the morning – it’s proper Slow food. There’s a bar and shop nearby and stacks of choice for days out: hiking, birdwatching, sublime Ronda or the heart-stopping Caminito del Rey. Come at festival time for ebullient celebrations.
