The
Experience

In the hills of the interior above Malaga, at the heart of the village of Cartajima, lies this large, light townhouse. Off the beaten tourist track, peace pervades, a gentle breeze bringing in fresh mountain air. Di and John have created an airy retreat full of welcoming spaces and quirky corners; escape the sun in the cool entrance and lounge, or snuggle down with a book in front of the fire in winter. Bedrooms come in different shapes, but all have tiled floors, colourful rugs and throws, comfy rocking chairs and neat en-suites, two with tubs. There are balconies, too, with little Moorish tables and chairs and heavenly views over the village. Up top, take evening drinks on the roof terrace with its tiled fountain – paddling permitted! A ‘fusion’ breakfast is served in the dining room and dinner is available on request: Di only cooks for her guests so let her know in the morning – it’s proper Slow food. There’s a bar and shop nearby and stacks of choice for days out: hiking, birdwatching, sublime Ronda or the heart-stopping Caminito del Rey. Come at festival time for ebullient celebrations.

Reviews

We had a wonderful few days in this gorgeous hotel. Everything was amazing quality and Di and John were fantastic hosts, sharing their knowledge of the local area. We would definitely recommend a stay here.

We have stayed in well over a 100 Sawday recommended places some of them over 3 or 4 times. I think we’ve stayed with Di and John 5 times. They are perfect hosts, Di is a great cook preparing especially delicious vegetarian meals for me a rare treat in a hotel. The hotel and rooms are tasteful and well equipped, the village is very picturesque and opportunities for walking abound ...we love staying here and frequently meet other returners.

Stayed here for a few days in April, 1st class service, wonderful food and views to die for, Well worth a visit.

Arriving at Di and John's luxurious hotel starts a holiday for the discerning traveller who likes a bit of an adventure. We have been staying with the early Spring and the Autumn for around 6 of 7 years and we feel very comfortable in either season. There is always a lovely log fire burning, and John will fix you a gin and tonic while Di is preparing dinner...always a treat, often with unusual flavours learnt on her extensive ocean travels. We always seem to meet extremely interesting people and it's a joy to have stimulating conversation in front of the fire. We recommend you give it a try!

This was our forth visit to the beautiful botique hotel nestled away in the quiet of Cartjema, yet only 10 miutes drive from the vibrant historical town of Ronda. The rooms as always were impecabbly clean, with comfty beds, soft furnishings, stunnng views from the little balconies of the surrounding mountains and books a plenty should you fel like taking one on to the stunning roof top terrace for some "me time". The food, the food...boy can Di cook, such a vast knolwedge and skills she provides an excellent varietly of meals each evening should you desire, and John will keep you enertained.

A inspirational place to relax and enjoy the wonders this world has to offer. Hosts Di and John welcome you with open arms to their beautiful boutique hotel, offering individual comfortable rooms and a roof top terrace with amazing views. In the open plan living/dining area you are welcome to relax before enjoying Di’s wonderful evening dinner with fabulous local wines. The walks from the hotel are as long or short as you want them to be taking in the stunning scenery and wildlife. With Ronda only s short drive away there is lots to explore. My husband & I will return to Los Castanos soon.

Dee, Cheltenham

We have stayed with Di and John four times and we shall return. Los Costanos is a very comfortable and characterful hotel in the middle of a classic white village. It can be used as a base to visit larger towns such as Seville or Ronda. We get great enjoyment from visiting other lovely white villages and the many well mapped walks and many wild spring flowers. Di and John are wonderful hosts providing a very relaxing environment with extremely delicious food, wine and a wealth of knowledge of the area. Of the many places we have stayed in Andalusia this is the best.

Ju, Windsor

Had a wonderful time staying at this comfortable and welcoming hotel. It's a beautiful area of Spain. We will return for walking, pampering and good food. A great place to get away from it all. Highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Di Beach & John Walker

  • The Alto Genal valley is a walker´s paradise. Quiet trails and tracks link the seven villages and we provide detailed up-to-date directions. And a rescue service if you get tired! Walks from 1 to 6 hours, medium difficulty.
  • We are on the migratory route for birds passing from Europe and Africa and vice versa. Spring and Autumn are great times to come. Also we are proud to have Peter Jones in our area for naturewatching days out - birds and flowers and culture and lunch!
  • Ronda is just 15 minutes drive away and, although it is a busy tourist town, is well worth at least a day to visit its many monuments. We have devised a lovely route around the town for you to enjoy when you come.
  • While in Ronda you must visit the Baños Arabes, beautifully restored baths from Arab days. And now, just nearby is a hamman where you can enjoy the same luxuries, different temperature baths (including ice!), and massage is included in the reasonable price
  • Use us as a base. We are equidistant, more or less, from each of the romantic cities of Andalucia: Jerez, Cadiz, Sevilla, Malaga are just a drive away. Take the train from Ronda and enjoy a great day trip to Cordoba or Granada. Back in time for dinner!
  • You will see a lot of talk on the internet about our food. But don´t come expecting Michelin-style cuisine. We serve excellent, cooked-to-order and from scratch, healthy, local ecological produce. We welcome vegetarians or vegans. Local wines from Ronda.
