The Experience

There’s inn-keeping in the family: this well-established roadside hosteria was started by Ana and Eva’s parents. A spectacular drive on narrow scenic roads brings you to the unassuming village of Bierge in the Parque Natural de Guara. The front garden, packed with thyme, rosemary, lavender and roses, provides colour against the perennial blue sky. Hotel-smart bedrooms have polished tiles, white metal bedheads, muslin drapes, perhaps a rattan armchair or two. Take a sundowner to the terrace for views of the hilltop church, floodlit at night: superb. In the restaurant some dishes will be cooked over an open fire, and don’t miss the ‘olive oil menu’ – the oil is from the family’s grove in La Rioja. At the back is an almond orchard, a cloud of white and pink in February when the blossom begins, and a pool – a release from the heat. Eva can arrange guided tours of the many bodegas of the Somontano region, or rafting, riding, climbing, ravine-spotting and birdwatching: eagles and vultures abound. A very family-friendly place, worth considering in spring and autumn, too.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Ana & Eva Viñuales Ferrando

  • Many visitors come to observe the local birdlife in the area; birds of prey such as lammergeiers, griffon vultures (a large colony lives in the area) and kites and other species such as wall creepers. Please ask the hotel for more information.
  • Foodies should ask the hotel to arrange a visit to a “Somontano” wine cellar, an increasingly popular wine with a Protected Denomination of Origin. Alternatively you could visit an olive oil mill or a dairy farm to see how local cheese is made.
  • For the more adventurous Sierra de Guara is one of the best places in Europe for rafting and canyoning due to the extension, height and beauty of the rock formations and rivers. The hotel can recommend specialized companies to organize trips.
  • There are a great variety of walks in the local area and we also recommend the “vias ferratas”. The hotel has lots of maps and general information available for guests. The neaby Rodellar is a very popular site for rock climbers.
  • The prehistoric cave paintings found in this natural park, declared a World Heritage Site, are well worth a visit. We also recommend visiting the medieval town of Alquézar.
  • There are many examples of Romanesque art dotted about across the Sierra and guests can combine walking with visits to the tiny churches. Don´t miss the 11th century Loarre Castle-Monastry with one of the best examples of a Romanesque church in Europe.
