The Experience

Sweet Lucia, a former opera designer, loves to surprise her guests with different breakfast menus and china every day. Daniel not only cooks superb fresh local food, he makes furniture from reclaimed bits and hikes in his ‘spare time’. They are a lively, fascinating couple whose love of music is ever-present: choose your own from 2000 vinyls. This strong, sensitively-restored 16th-century house overlooking the magnificent Huesca Pyrenees is their life project. One stone-walled room leads through arches to another, clever soft lighting relaxes, wooden furniture and deep dark leather call you to settle down for a good read or a game of chess. Each handsome bedroom has a sitting area, original features include old carved doors on built-in cupboards, stone seats facing each other for courtly conversations in one room, headboards made of old window grilles in others. Stylish bathrooms are a mix of ancient and modern, too. You can watch birds of prey from the terrace with Sila the sheepdog or set out to see the nearby nature park and the Romanesque treasures of La Fueva. Go canyoning, climbing, mountain biking.

The high point of a trip to northern Spain. We loved our room - white-curtained four poster, minimalist chic bathroom and a private terrace, where we snuggled into Adirondack chairs to enjoy mountain views. Dinner was exceptional: the unprepossessing menu offered no choice, but every dish was sensational - Daniel is a gifted chef with a rare ability to combine ingredients - and we were guided towards the pefect wine, too. Breakfast was a delight and Daniel kindly advised us on routes and local attractions: the canyons of the Sierra de Guara are breathtaking.

Patricia, Campagnac-les-Quercy

Staying here was the gem of our time in Spain. After a long drive, entering Al Vent was immediately relaxing, a retreat away from the rat race. A spacious room with air-con, large bathroom & a view of the valley was just the beginning. Daniel's food was phenomenal. Dinner was outstanding, & every breakfast as nourishing & unique as the last - we learnt about the region's food & wine in the process! With no prior knowledge of the area, Daniel advised us on walks, swims & sights in the area - all stunning & tailored to our needs. In a tourist free town, I can't recommend this enough. Thank you!
