The Experience

Tucked away in a village where rolling farmland nudges the foothills of the Sierra de Cuera, is a 1990s version of a traditional Asturian house, a small hotel surrounded by lush meadows, grazing cows, and dry-stone walls. Such is the beauty of Asturias.

Bedrooms are big and light with an air of colonial elegance. Two have their own patios leading to the grounds – a semi-tropical, four-acre paradise designed by María Eugenia.

Start the day with an Asturian feast of pancakes, tortilla, granola, numerous breads, and honeys and jams. Spin off on the bikes, or take a put on the golf course by the sea. Or follow the glorious coastal path – by pony or on foot. If energetic pursuits do not appeal, then visit the cider houses of bustling Llanes, a ten-minute drive… Sirio and María Eugenia know the best places. An ideal first stop after a long ferry trip with little ones: the hotel is an hour from Santander.

We think you'll love

  • The native birds, ducks, deer, shrubs, ferns, and 300 species of trees. It's worth coming here for the gardens alone
  • Being soothed by gentle colonial interiors, where Spanish art deco rubs shoulders with Indian and African pieces
  • The breathtaking views of the Picos de Europa - so close you could reach out and touch them

Reviews

El Habana is a unique place. The design of this hotel is second to none making it comfortable, relaxing and stylish. It has that special vintage taste mixing romanticism and peace. The exotic decoration is not excessive and creates a very comfortable ambience. The garden well deserves to stay overnight and enjoy a relaxing walk discovering its wonderful nature. Peaceful and spectacular scenery.

Pedro, Sawday's Inspector

We stayed two nights in a large, very comfortable ground floor room with patio doors out into the garden. The bathroom was spacious with nice toiletries. The breakfasts were delicious, as was dinner. There is a walk with a plan of the large garden, with trees and shrubs named. The history of the hotel's beginnings was interesting too. It's a quiet place to stay, yet an easy drive to the nearby small town and coast. There are plenty of sitting areas in the garden and a very comfortable lounge. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We would certainly return if we are in the area.

Will certainly come back - utterly charming, wonderful garden, delicious food, very comfortable room and very good peaceful sitting areas both inside and out a very special place

liz, Dorchester

We stayed two nights at El Habana. Our suite was wonderful - floor to ceiling windows overlooking the garden with beautiful trees and shrubs, framed by the mountains. Tiled floors and antiques set the tone. The welcome could not have been warmer, and our little dog was made to feel particularly at home. Fantastic knowledge of the local area, great recommendations for walks. Dinner was excellent, especially the black paella we had on our final evening. Delicious breakfast. Excellent service throughout our stay, which we wished could have been longer!

Jean

perfect spot. wonderfully remote and yet close to a town. Perfect for serving food all the time so no need to have a siesta and then wait ages for dinner if you have young English children not used to staying up! such nice staff, not obtrusive and yet missing nothing

Location

The neighbourhood

Listen to the birds from the veranda and pergola, glory at the mountains, enjoy a lap in the pool. Shops and restaurants are 3km away, in the lively town of Llanes. From a harbour wall painted in dazzling colours, you reach a medieval quarter above. Equally close are golden bathing beaches and wave-dashed cliffs. As for the surrounding landscape, the greenness of Asturias takes your breath away.

Introducing

María Eugenia Caumel & Sirio Sáinz

Sirio and María Eugenia are well travelled (Sirio has completed the Dakar Rally 11 times!). Both have lived in India; much of the furniture is from María Eugenia's home in New Delhi. Seeking a traditional 'indiano' house in the '90s, they wound up creating their own: he planning the construction and she the garden. Both are multi-lingual and delightful. You could not wish for nicer hosts.
