The Experience
Over the Casano river, then up the winding road to a village perched high, surrounded by majestic peaks. A sharp turn… and there is Jascal, an intricate pattern of red roofs and chimneys against a Picos panorama, and in perfect keeping with the local style. Carlos and Barbra, hospitable, knowledgeable hosts, greet you at reception then show you around. Choose one of three apartments set back in the hillside, or one of two ‘casas’ in the three-storey house. You’ll love the spacious open-plan living rooms with wood-burning stoves, the built-in wardrobes with locally made doors, the great big beds dressed in white linen and the decorative features; and the enchanted mossy forest landscape will have you spellbound. Wild cherries bloom in March, fungi burst forth in autumn, mountain streams gush, badgers and chamoix trot the paths, goat and cow bells tinkle in the distance. Follow the farm track up the valley, stop at a bar for a delicious ‘racion’ (and some of the local, creamy Cabrales), call Carlos to ferry you home. Or take the gentle circular walk to little Inguanzo (1.5km) for lunch. Picos heaven for nature lovers.

We absolutely loved Jascal. We spent 7 nights in Casa Luna and it was just gorgeous. The accommodation is warm, spacious and super clean and comfortable. The location is heaven. The views are so beautiful, it's utterly peaceful and relaxing. Jascal is located in easy reach of some great walking too. Barbra and Carlos were great hosts, really friendly and helpful but also unobtrusive. We loved Jascal and highly recommend it.

We've stayed some days in Casa Luna. We've enjoyed it very much. A superb view on the mountains, a spacious and clean appartment with everything you need. On top of all that we felt more than welcome and got some great advice from Barbra where to go and eat. We would strongly advice Jascal for a relaxing holiday in a beautifull part of Spain!

An incredibly place to stay and definitely somewhere we intend to return to. We had a great few days and highly recommend staying here. The accommodation is rustic, yet warm, comfortable and practical, and the surroundings and views are very memorable. We highly recommend walking across the valley to the village across the other side to get a feel for the immediate area

We strongly recommend Jascal: for the high quality of the accommodation, the lovely local walks, and the ease of excursions, either to the beach or to the mountains. Carlos (Spanish) and Barbara (US) have done a great designing and building job, and offer a warm and well-informed welcome to the area. We especially liked the spectacular views from the large windows, the comfortable beds and the stylish furnishings; also the many local walks, through the flower meadows, over the hills, through the beech and chestnut woods, and along the streams.

A beautiful peaceful location in an ideal spot for exploring the Picos and sampling the local specialties. We visited in early June, when the weather was perfect for walking but even the best known walking routes were pleasantly quiet. The casa where we stayed was well equipped and very comfortable, we particularly enjoyed appreciating the view from our outside table, while sampling a great deal of tasty local cheese. Highly recommended.

A wonderful, tranquil place to stay. It's hard to believe that even the excellent photos on the website don't do the view justice, but it's simply stunning and yet feels very private. We stayed in Casa Luna which was beautifully equipped and designed and had one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Barbra was a fantastic host throughout - from our first enquiry right through to letting us use the cottage for a few extra hours on the last day. Very kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable. We'd love to go back.

The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Barbra Fogarty
- Excellent walking routes right from your door and hikes into the heart of the Picos. Choose from scenic strolls, river walks, routes in the forest, mountain huts, challenging ascents or coastal hikes. We'll be pleased to lend you our detailed walking maps.
- A stunning array of wildflowers. The Picos de Europa are known for their amazing flora, both in the number of species AND quantity of flowers. Any time of year is good, but May-June are probably the best months to enjoy "las flores".
- Gorgeous beaches just 20 minutes away. Whether you enjoy, walking on the beach, sun-bathing, swimming or surfing, you'll have dozens of coves to choose from. We'll advise on which spots are best at high or low tide.
- Great swimming at the river, just a 10-minute drive away. After a short walk on an ancient path, you'll have your choice of natural pools in beautiful surroundings with refreshingly cold water!
- Delicious regional cuisine and some of the world's best blue cheese. We'll be happy to recommend nearby restaurants, arrange for a cheese-tasting session or practise pouring cider with you, until you master the technique!
- Traditional festivities, charming villages and country living at a relaxed pace. Eastern Asturias is full of unique mountain villages and lovely coastal towns. You'll enjoy the local architecture and amazing views everywhere you look.
