A stunningly crafted Asturian stone barn, an impeccable architect-designed interior and vast mountain views for wild walking and deep peace

Read guest comments

Park at the top, walk two minutes down through the typical Asturian hamlet (Marc and Olga will help with the luggage) to this beautifully designed stone barn in its wild and ancient mountain setting. Rebuilt in local style by Marc, an English architect, and Spanish wife Olga, it is all minimalist grey concrete and natural plaster inside with superb German windows, modern art on the walls, shelves loaded with books, soft lighting and an open hearth (masses of logs on hand); a talented mix of high-modern and trad-cosy. On the ground floor are the two bedrooms, one large, one smaller, and the perfect shower room. Up the generous open staircase is the living space with its impeccable modern kitchen (kitted out for home cooked meals), sitting/dining area and heart-stopping views (myriad stars at night). From the little terrace your eye flows out to those green hillsides and up to the mountains; this is, in effect, your wild and wonderful garden. Glorious hikes can be had from the front door but do start with the lovely walk up the valley of the river Casaño to the ancient lakes of Covadonga. Wonderful hospitality, wild nature; the perfect holiday retreat.

Local points of interest from
Marc Furnival & Olga Ramalle:

  • From the nearby village of Arenas de Cabrales there is good access to the dramatic mountains of the Picos de Europa, with walks, routes and climbs (and even caves) for all abilities and ages
  • Little known walks straight from the house past fields of wildflowers into the park itself, along tree-shaded paths by the Casaño river with ancient Chestnut forests. Routes above the village with views into the heart of the mountains and across to the sea
  • The nearby, green coast of Asturias offers beautiful beaches tucked away alongside freshwater rivers flowing out to sea, pretty seaside towns such as Llanes and Ribadesella, and clifftop walks with spectacular blowholes spraying up on wild, stormy days
  • The well renowned Cabrales blue cheese is still made traditionally. In the mountain village of Sotres, Javier shows you how cheese is made, the cave where it matures and lets you try the cheeses afterwards with cider poured from height in the customary way
  • There is a great range of restaurants and eateries from Michelin stars to homecooked fayre. Fresh seafood straight off the boat, tasty vegetarian dishes from local allotments and succulent meat dishes from special breed animals raised ecologically nearby
  • Sunday farmers market in the lovely town of Cangas de Onís. Offering traditional local produce and river walks after lunch under the mediaeval bridge said to be of Roman origin, with many events through the year. "Professional photos by Niko Lopez".

"We had a fabulous holiday in Spain at Casa Cusau, La Molina and wanted to let you know what a brilliant place it is to stay and how all the little extras provided by the owners made our holiday an exceptional experience and very relaxing and enjoyable time. The accommodation is first rate, the location is spectacular with views of the Picos from all aspects plus the option to take a stroll into the mountains straight from the front door. Everything was provided with a good selection of beverages and the basics plus access to wine and spirits. Thank-you for introducing us to Casa Cusau. "

"Tranquil and beautiful retreat with stunning views of the Pico mountains. Stylish and modern interior with all mod cons, and very comfortable. Wonderful walking trails from the front door. Our hosts Olga and Mark could not have been more helpful. Definitely very highly recommended."

"Our week in Casa Cusau far exceeded our expectations - a more beautifully designed interior than the website could ever do justice to - spacious, minimalistic and elegantly functional, equipped perfectly for a really comfortable and restful stay. The views out to the hills and valleys opposite were stunning, and accompanied by just birdsong and the sound of cow bells from the surrounding fields. The location in a beautiful pocket of Asturias is excellently placed for walking and beaches, alike. Olga and Marc were great hosts and enormously welcoming and accommodating. Will definitely be back."
