Pikamendi is a very special place, in fact our inspector said it’s probably the most interesting he’s ever visited and he’s seen a few! You’ll delight in this eclectically yet exquisitely decorated house filled with the owner’s finds from Europe and Asia and with views sweeping over vineyards to the sea. The total silence is absorbing but you’re within easy striking distance of buzzing San Sebastián, Bilbao or Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz in France. Your hosts know the area well; it has the highest number of Michelin stars anywhere, and they can book you into all the right restaurants. It’s all in the details of course: when you sweep into the drive your luggage is taken to your room and you may walk, or get a lift, to the house; a uniformed maid serves excellent breakfasts; there’s a smart pool and treadmills – with a view. The bedrooms in this ancient building are fabulous, the suites are huge and every room is lavishly furnished and unique. Bathrooms are spoiling with walk-in showers, deep tubs, piles of fluffy towels and a smorgasbord of smellies. And you get the rest of the house to roam: veranda with sea views, sitting room with open fire, library and snooker room.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from José Luis & Maria Elena

  • Learn about the incredibly rich Basque history and culture and, at the same time, enjoy its natural beauty with beautiful landscapes and fantastic beaches around Caserío Pikamendi.
  • We will be delighted to assist you in organizing a custom-made tour of the region with visits to local and internationally renowned museums, like Balenciaga, Zuloaga, Chillida-Leku, Guggenheim, Bellas Artes, Marítimo de la Ría or de la Sidra Vasca.
  • The Basque Country is said to be the region with the most Michelin-Star restaurants per capita in the world. Over forty restaurants awarded with at least one of the coveted stars, like Martín Berasategui‎, Akelarre, Arzak, Mugaritz, Zuberoa or Etxebarri.
  • Also, we could recommend a fresh fish dish at one of the local restaurants at Getaria’s harbour, “pintxos” in San Sebastian’s “parte vieja” (old town), “Chuletón” (t-bone steak) at a local “sidrería”, or a tasting menu at a restaurant.
  • Some of the cities and towns that may be of your interest around the caserío (less than 100km) are Zarautz, Zumaia, Donostia (San Sebastian), Eibar, Hondarribia, Oñati, Gernika, Bilbao or Pamplona. And near in France: Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz or Bayonne
  • Less than two hours driving from the Caserío you will reach the Rioja Area where some prestigious wine companies have their vineyards and caves which are open to the public with a previous appointment. Also, you can visit the beautiful caves in Navarra.
