A characterful old family house converted by a mother and daughter team of interior designers into a smaller home plus four stylish, practical apartments on the upper two floors. Take all four as a group – of foodies perhaps – and the super basement is yours too, with its professional-grade kitchen, huge sitting room with open fireplace and dining indoors and out on a covered terrace by the small garden. There’s local information in the stone-floored entrance hall then it’s upstairs to the bright, attractive apartments. Each has its own terrace, modern wooden ceilings and floors, whitewashed walls, peacefully pale fabrics, great beds, and well-designed kitchens and bathrooms. Monte has stairs up to its large sitting room (with sofa bed), kitchen and dining areas. Views west towards the mountains, from Bosque and Valle, are best. On the main road to the village, much expanded recently as it’s so handy for Bilbao and Santander, it’s no distance to small shops, good bars and restaurants. There are excellent beaches nearby, great walking in rolling Cantabrian hills, and along the Sanitago de Compostela coastal route.
