Unfussy accommodation and a warm welcome await in this old farmhouse. Eat tasty home-cooked food and hike in the Picos de Europa

Read guest comments

You can almost reach out and touch the steep wooded hillsides of the sunny Liébana valley – they hug this tiny hamlet. Opposite an old waterwheel where sheep's fleeces were once pounded into Cantabrian felt, find a large, robust Spanish farmhouse that beats with an English heart: John and Gwynneth, from Cumbria, relish the peace and off-the-beaten-paths of the Picos de Europa. John cooks tasty dishes – local lamb, black pudding, apricot crumble, home-churned ice cream – served at bright tables in a fire-flickered dining room. Before dinner, mingle with locals in the bar or take a drink out to the suntrap terrace, or the large lawn where children can play; all you hear is a gurgling stream and birdsong. Nothing disturbs the peace. Tired muscles rest soundly in simple, homely rooms with patterned bedcovers, rugs and armchairs; the triple, under the eaves, breathes in light and landscape through a velux window. Your hosts know the best hidden hiking and snow-shoeing spots; you're close to the Fuente Dé cable car and the classic Picos town of Potes. No fuss, no frills, just friendliness and good value.

  • Plan excursions in the peace and tranquility of the terrace to the chapel of the Patron Saint of Liebana, Santa Toribio Monastery and Romanesque Churches.
  • Flowers abound in the hay meadows, roadside verges, woodlands and bare rock regions at high altitude. Where ever you view flowers there will be an abundance of other wildlife, birds, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians.
  • Take the cable car from Fuente De, one of the longest single span cable cars in Europe at an altitude of 1070m up to over 1800m in four minutes. Simply enjoy the views and a coffee or more extensive walking.
  • Visit the paleolithic caves at Altamira to see the cave paintings, or El Soplao where mother nature carved out labyrinthine galleries where dripping water has formed stalacmites, stalactites and amazing helictites.
  • We can advise on all year round walking routes for all ages and ability from strolling through dappled woods to snow shoeing. For cyclists who enjoy a challenge, follow the routes taken by the tour of Spain.
  • Liebana Valley offers ample opportunities for more adventurous outdoor activities such as mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, canyoning, and climbing. We can put you in contact with the relevant professional guides.

"WOW! Booked for 3 nights, stayed 7 (seems to be a recurring theme in these reviews). Really great location, really nice people, excellent food... I have eaten worse in places with Michelin stars at three times the price, and the standard was consistently high every night. Casa La Pisa is more of a boutique hotel than a B&B, that term just doesn't do it justice. "

"booked for two nights and stayed for eleven, what a brilliant place and the most welcoming hosts, bikers most welcome, the rooms are excellent in every aspect and the food prepared and cooked by John was second to none(he must have been on master chef) puddings to die for,and a different menu each night and what a fabulous hostess Gwen is, nothing is too much trouble for either of them.Thank you John and Gwen for making our holiday one of the best we have ever had. "It's hard to describe how we all felt when we approached La Pisa. We all had grins on our faces because it is such a beautiful setting. We were only there for two nights but could have stayed so much longer. The tranquility, sounds of nature and beautiful flowers will stay with us for a very long time. Thank you John and Gwyneth for your warm hospitality, helpfulness and absolutely delicious food. "

"We would definately recommend this Hotel as is was wonderful. Gwen and John made us feel really welcome and at home. The rooms were very good and the food was excellent, cooked by John himself. We would have like to have stayed longer but it was not possible on this occasion. We did some walking whilst we were there and it was really good to be able to come back to a fantastic meal and very good company. We will return!!"

"My wife and I stayed at La Pisa for five nights in early June 2015. Arriving late afternoon we were warmly greeted by Gwen, who showed us our lovely room with a view out over the old water mill. Even though we had not pre-ordered supper Gwen showed us the menu and took our order. The house and its setting are marvellous, and John and Gwen are charming hosts, ready to chat, offer advice on trips even including maps and guides etc. We normally tend to eat out when on holiday, but John's meals were top class so we dined in every night. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning."

"Three very rewarding days spent here, with superb food (John is a trained chef) and very helpful advice from Gwyn about walking possibilities - in fact, she sent us one day on our best walk ever in the nearby Picos. A charming couple who really care about their guests, and are great fun into the bargain."

"Our stay in La Pisa was one of the best ever. The food was highest standard. The tree course meals of John changed daily and used only local product. The food was so good that we wished to try every dish. Gwen and John are lovely, very hospitable and interesting to talk to. They help you to find the right walks and the local wine. Our three days were the highlight of our holidays and Great Value. Health permitting we will return, return, return – Evelyn and Peter"

"We've had the most wonderful time at La Pisa. The hotel is tucked out of the way in a tiny traditionnal village, set in a sunny valley with fabulous views of the Picos. There's lot to do for all tastes in the area and all the useful information we were given by John, Gwen and Claire definitely beat all the tourist guides. But what made it such a special place for us was that you couldn't find a nicer family to welcome you and make you feel comfortable and relaxed. And of course, the food was simply delicious, with fresh and local ingredients cooked to a tasty perfection! We'll be back!"

The walks are amazing, the weather was beautiful and the welcome at La Pisa was lovely. John is a great cook, we ate incredibly well, our room was extremely comfortable and both John and Gwen made us feel extremely welcome and at home. Thank you!"

"We cycled up to La Pisa via the fantastic Hermida Gorge and found a fabulous welcome in the most scenic of locations. Not only was a cold beer available upon arrival but also a really friendly welcome from John, Gwen and Claire, a fabulous room with a view of the Picos d'Europa and a booked evening meal. And what a meal!! This is fine cuisine, served with local wines in the very finest of style in good company. We stayed three nights and had three fabulous meals based on a different bespoke menu each evening. A great location for cycling and walking - a very special place. We'll return!"

"Definitely a place to recommend. A very warm welcome from John, Gwen and their daughter Claire. Wonderful food cooked by John: a special blend of Spanish and English cuisine, with some sumptuous sauces and flavours. The dining room is full of maps and guides, with John as a real expert in advice on walks and climbs in this wonderful but challenging mountain range. Architecturally unexceptional but located in a charming hamlet well off the tourist track."
