The Experience

You get two houses, just steps apart: the main house has three bedrooms and a beautiful living space with an open fire and a games cupboard – the sort of room where you will just enjoy ‘being’ or spending time with loved ones. The kitchen is stylish and has plenty of space for enthusiastic helpers who can watch the river flowing beneath them through a glass cover. The welcome hamper brims with wine, olive oil, coffee and tea.

You should sleep well in quiet bedrooms with swish bedding, good mattresses and eco-friendly soaps. There are seven acres of land to roam and two gardens; the main one with an undercover seating area and large table, and a back garden for escapees with a book. There’s an extra living room in the second house, an outdoor shower and river swimming.

Cycle or drive to Pedraza or Sepulveda for medieval architecture and delicious Spanish lamb stew; come back for fabulous star gazing.

Location

The neighbourhood

Explore the Sierra de Guadarrama Natural Park and the Hoces Del Río Duratón, or the Riaza River. Hiking, cycling and bird watching are superb. The cave at Los Enebralejos in the village has magnificent stalactites and stalagmites and engravings which date back to 2500 BC. Canoeing, horse riding, climbing and even skiing are all accessible. You're only one hour from Madrid.

Local points of interest from Carlos & Ana Gabas

  • You are in an old watermill in the middle of nowhere, in a protected forest of juniper trees, just by the river side. There are no neighboors other than deer and birds. It is just perfect for relaxing with your family and friends any time of the year.
  • The region is one of the most authentic and inhabited areas of Northern Castille. If you trekk around, you will encounter the traditional shepperds, working donkeys and tiny villages of less than 20 people where the locals seem to be over a 100 years old
  • By bike (or car), you may visit three beautiful medieval villages that are really worth a trip: Pedraza, Sepúlveda and the Pueblos Rojos. They are catalogued among the most beautiful villages in Spain, and the food there is very unique.
  • In less than 10 miles, you have two National Parks. Guadarrama National Park is a mountain range with mountains 2.400m high. At Hoces del Duratón you can kayak or walk its 100m deep canyon with the largest griffon vulture colony in Europe.
  • Within a 30 minute drive you may visit Segovia, the capital of the region, with its Old Town and Roman Aqueduct declared World Heritage by Unesco. You may visit San Ildefonso with its gardens and palace imitating Versalles. Or drive to Madrid just 1h away
  • If you enjoy outdoor activities, from our house you can do hiking, swimming in natural pools, biking (we offer electric mountain bikes), stargazing with a guide, kayaking, horseback riding, skiing (20km away), paragliding, ballon flight and others.
