The Experience

Set majestically on a hilltop near Manresa, the medieval farmhouse lords it over forests, villages and the distant mountains of Montserrat. This is rural Catalunya at its best. When you arrive, mother Marta may well be tending to the animals – horses, pigs, peacocks – or cooking delicious meals with home-grown vegetables. The family have many hectares of land in which you can hike, discovering stone huts, vineyards and orchards. The ‘castle’ feels more like a fortified farmhouse, with a chapel that once served the village below. Solid and majestic, it is also cosy and warm with homely sitting rooms where you can pour a coffee and relax by the fire or play ping-pong. Upstairs are five light, airy bedrooms with new mattresses and spotless shower rooms. Three have balconies looking out to the mountains – but for the best views, sit on the terrace with a glass of wine as dusk falls. Breakfast, a feast of home-baked cakes and cured meats, will set you up for hiking, cycling or a cable car ride up to Montserrat’s Benedictine abbey. Return to a dip in the swimming pool and a warm welcome from this charming Catalan family.

We stayed here for two nights enroute to our son’s wedding in Barcelona and received a lovely warm welcome from Marta and her son Josep. Our air conditioned room was light and bright and very comfortable, with a small but perfectly formed ensuite shower room - spotlessly clean and with nice quality towels and toiletries. We had French doors with shutters, a small balcony and wonderful distant views, in all directions. It is a family run hillside farm, in a truly stunning location, with the added bonus of producing their own wine and Marta is an excellent cook. Dining is an absolute delight!

Marta could not have been more welcoming, ushering us in with a mix of English, French, Spanish and Catalan, bathing us in kindness, comfort and hospitality. Despite the foul weather outside, we were cosy and well fed. We loved the view of menacing Montserrat from our balconies, trembled slightly at the hairpin route up from the village - and you do need satnav, the house map being inadequate.

Our hosts could not have been more welcoming. Our one-night stay was made memorable by an excellent dinner on the terrace overlooking a 50-mile view. Stunning!

I didn't want to leave! One night 'passing through' did not do this exquisite place justice. We had a wonderful welcome from Josep, Marc and Marta who made us feel very at home. We were the only guests which made it special. We recommend booking in for supper in advance (especially due to the hilly driveway!) which was truly delicious, as was breakfast, with lots of homemade products. A dip in the pool was great and the views from the delightful, fresh room and from the garden are out of this world. We cannot wait to return for a longer visit.

We stayed at the Castell de Guardiola for 2 nights and this is certainly rural Catalunya at its best. We were warmly welcomed by Marta and her 2 sons Josep and Marc and throughout our stay their generous hospitality were exceptional. Everything was top-notch: the ambiance of a medieval farmhouse setting, the panoramic far-reaching views, the comfortable and immaculate room, the hot and cold breakfasts and the 3 course tasty authentic Catalonian meals prepared for dinner by Marta. It was well worth it including this special place in our Spain itinerary. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful stay at Castell de Guardiola. It was the perfect vacation for my husband and I. Wonderful location just a short drive from Barcelona. Breathtaking views all around. Marta and her sons are incredible hosts. Very friendly and took care of any need we had. Marta is an extraordinary cook and we loved her breakfasts and dinners. This is the perfect place for rest and relaxation, beautiful hiking trails, amazing food, and for exploring the Montserrat and the city of Barcelona. This has been the best bed and breakfast experience we have had and we highly recommend for a great stay!

Kylie, Amsterdam

From the moment of our arrival at this wonderfully peaceful farm, Martha and her son showered us with their warmth and boundless hospitality. We were greeted with a sweet wine and Martha's cakes, shown to our immacualtely clean and comfortable bedroom with huge views over the hills towards Monserrat and helped to understand the best areas to explore. We extended our stay, enjoyed Martha's fabulous breakfasts and evening meals and left as friends. This Bed and Breakfast is as near perfect as anyone could hope for.

Linda, London

From the start of our stay to the end this farmhouse was excellent. The views the bedroom, the cleanliness, the amazing breakfasts and evening meals. The hosts were charming and helpful. We would recommend to friends and family. This place rates in our top 5 places to stay. Mary and Tim

The farmhouse is in an idyllic situation on a mountain top with stupendous views. Nothing is too much trouble for Maria the owner and her son, who are keen to please you at every turn with their home made produce which is excellent, as are the breakfasts and an evening meal if you wish, served in a large cool dining room. Spectacular Montserrat is only 20 minutes away. A memorable 3 days and incredible value for money.. Everything about Castell de Guardiola shows quality and attention to detail. Highly recommended.
