Set majestically on a hilltop near Manresa, the medieval farmhouse lords it over forests, villages and the distant mountains of Montserrat. This is rural Catalunya at its best. When you arrive, mother Marta may well be tending to the animals – horses, pigs, peacocks – or cooking delicious meals with home-grown vegetables. The family have many hectares of land in which you can hike, discovering stone huts, vineyards and orchards. The ‘castle’ feels more like a fortified farmhouse, with a chapel that once served the village below. Solid and majestic, it is also cosy and warm with homely sitting rooms where you can pour a coffee and relax by the fire or play ping-pong. Upstairs are five light, airy bedrooms with new mattresses and spotless shower rooms. Three have balconies looking out to the mountains – but for the best views, sit on the terrace with a glass of wine as dusk falls. Breakfast, a feast of home-baked cakes and cured meats, will set you up for hiking, cycling or a cable car ride up to Montserrat’s Benedictine abbey. Return to a dip in the swimming pool and a warm welcome from this charming Catalan family.
