The Experience

In the centre of everything yet away from tourists, this hilltop village house is in an enviable position. Beaches are 10 minutes, Roman Tarragona closer, Cistercian monasteries abound, while walks and cycling routes surround it. In the village centre, up a tiny alley, its deceptively traditional entrance opens to a spare, modern house, spread over three floors and flooded with light. Walls are white, floors creamy tiled, the furniture crisp and contemporary, and bedrooms cool and simple. Modern art, funky lighting and bold splashes of colour in rugs and bed covers add warmth and homeliness. Indeeed, this is the UK owners’ home part of the year, hence the kitchen is for serious cooking. (Catalan friends welcome you; no English but it works!) So many dining choices: in the kitchen, on the patio or on the large covered terrace. The main bedroom and top-floor hideaway (sofabed and shower room) have terraces, too. All rooms have views over nearby villages to the sea or countryside; the best from the double-height living room with its cosy mezzanine seating area. Only church bells disturb the peace.

Cal Pep is a home away from home, located in a very quiet and beautiful village but with easy access to more busy seaside resorts with beautiful beaches and restaurants. The house has loads of hang out spaces both internally and externally which was great for downtime. The house is beautifully furnished and very well equipped. We really appreciated the folder of information that the host Maggie has provided, it was very helpful for us to explore and navigate the region. Our teenage boys really enjoyed their days in Port Aventura which is a 20 min drive away. Overall we had a fantastic week!

What a house! Just perfect to escape from everything else. You wish in the end that you didn’t have to leave and will be reaching for the diary to find out when you can get back. The local seaside towns are very Spanish and not subject to the wrong influences and the beaches have wonderful sand and restaurants right on the sea edge. I noticed Spanish families sitting in the restaurants and their children playing in the sand a few meters away. Just perfect for whatever you are looking for.

Cal Pep is a stunning house, really well designed and the views from it’s various balconies absolutely breathtaking. We’re a family of four and it suited us down to the ground. Maggie was really great to deal with and was very good at answering all our questions. The nearest beaches are only a few kilometres away and takes about 15 minutes to drive there - La Mora was our particular favourite. Portaventura theme park is also within easy reach - about 40 minutes drive away. Monserrat is also worth a trip.

Cal Pep was the most amazing home. Beautiful design, stunning scenery, and very tranquil and relaxing. Lovely small villages and towns to visit. We loved all the organic food in the area too. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this fabulous house. Maggie is a super host and Amanda was very welcoming to greet us. Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful home.

Sawdays says: “In the centre of everything yet away from tourists, this hilltop village house is in an enviable position.” Spot on. A great space, great location and the perfect hide away just 15 minutes from the glorious Mediterranean’s past and present.

The impressive wooden entrance doors hide behind them a most wonderful house which has the 'wow' factor in abundance. Views from the two terraces never stop changing and encourage all meals to be taken outside. Kitchen is just 'top class' with every item you need and the lounge is very comfortable for catching up with news from UK. The master bedroom is a masterpiece and the entrance hall has to be seen for it's space. This house has been re-built with a massive amount of thought and care. In the village there is a very well stocked shop, a wine shop, a Co-op and a bar/cafe. Absolutely A1

Wonderful house. Very high spec throughout, spacious, large terraces, in a quiet village with beautiful views from the main terrace over farmed valley. Very helpful owner, with friendly responses to our queries. Everything you need for a very comfortable stay, including an excellent kitchen and outdoor barbeque. Very private, yet close to excellent beaches and other small villages, and a short hop to the airport at Reus.

Stayed at Cal Pep for ten days, a beautiful house with amazing views. The photos & description are very accurate but you are still surprised when you enter through the door to such a well designed, spacious home! The views & sunsets from the terraces are amazing. Everything in the house works well & is of good quality, it is not a rental it is definitely a home ! Maggie ,the owner , was very helpful & communication was easy. You need a car to discover the various villages , castles, Roman ruins & beaches (plenty of info available in the house). This is an exceptional holiday rental.

Beryl, Ysceifiog

A superb well appointed and equipped spacious casa with stunning views of surrounding countryside. Convenient for city, coast and country visits and trips. Cal Pep lives fully up to its billing , thoroughly recommended.

Jane, Dorset

Such a beautiful house with wonderful views from the many terraces/balconies. Maggie was great and really helpful. The house was so tastefully furnished with everything you could want. Two fridges for example, were great for chilling wine and beer. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms fantastic. Tarragona itself was very close and great for history and lovely meals. The far end of Torremdembarra beach was the quietest we found. Altafulla is a beautiful little old town. All in all Cal Pep is a quiet spot that has easy access to beach, historical towns and everything. We loved it!

Local points of interest from Maggie Russell

  • Only 25 mins from Reus airport or 50 minutes from Barcelona airport, La Nou is a working village set on a rocky outcrop surrounded by its vineyards and olive groves. From its miradors see the sea in one direction and the 800m high 'serra' in the other.
  • Superbly placed for getting to know Catalunya. Follow long and short distance walking and cycling trails through farmland, pine forests and old villages. Visit historic 'Castells' and Cistercian monasteries and the site of the Battle of the Ebro.
  • And it is only 20 mins from the centre of the bustling and attractive city of Tarragona, the provincial capital with its cafes and bars, impressive Roman remains and fascinating 'casc antic'.
  • Chill out on the extensive golden sandy beaches of Torredembarra, Altafulla, Tamarit and La Mora - all within about 15 mins. Then enjoy excellent catalan cooking from traditional to 'gastronomique'.
  • Situated at the western end of the Penedès wine region, La Nou produces its own wines and cava, which you can buy at the village bodega. It is also less than an hour’s drive from the famed Priorat wine region and its prize-winning bodegas.
  • By train from nearby Torredembarra to the centre of Barcelona takes under an hour, with a frequent service. Madrid by the AVE is only 2h 40 mins from Camp de Tarragona station.
