Extremadura is a land that is embracing and wild, one of huge open landscapes, big skies and ancient stones. The Kelseys were moved by the magic of the place – and its birdlife is exceptional. Storks and cranes flock in vast numbers, lured by the promise of easy pickings in the rice paddies, fed by acequías (aqueducts) which originate in large reservoirs. They happened upon a former 'lagar', a farm where wine was made, and have created a home of simple, solid comfort, spiced up by furnishings brought back from the East. Bedrooms in the main house, and one outbuilding, are spotless, peaceful and traditional. Share dinner with fellow guests in the wafer-bricked, vaulted dining room where the wine was once made; expect heaps of fresh vegetables, much from the garden. Beyond, cultural treasures abound. Take coffee in the square in lovely historic Trujillo, or visit Cáceres, Mérida and Guadalupe, a bit further. Discover the flora and fauna of the nearby Parque Nacional de Monfragüe – professional ornithologist Martin can advise – or simply laze beneath the willow beside the pool.

"Martin and Claudia are delightful hosts. Our room was very comfortable and had air conditioning - blissful in 36 degrees! Both Dinner and Breakfast were delicious and they rightly take great pride in sourcing produce locally. We were treated to the first figs of the season from their trees and even the olive oil is from their garden, pressed locally! Highly recommended."

"We spent four nights here on our recent visit to Spain. Martin and Claudia were delightful hosts and a mine of information about both birds and the many places of interest in the surrounding area. Their evening meals are great if you don't want to eat out in the evening and our accommodation was comfortable. Set in a lovely rural location, the swimming pool was an added bonus for either a dip or just chilling!"

"We spent the first 3 nights of our first trip to Spain here. Martin and Claudia were great hosts. We are not birders, but El Recuerdo served as our home base for visiting Trujillo, Guadalupe, and Merida. El Recuerdo is in a beautiful, rural area where we enjoyed evening walks and a morning stroll down the lane that runs beside the inn. The room was quite comfortable, with a small sitting area in addition to the sleeping area. Breakfast was more than adequate for us, as it included yogurt, cheese, ham, quince, fresh fruit, jams, cereal, and breads. The cost of our accommodations was very reasonable. We enjoyed our stay and are grateful that the first stop of our vacation was such a good experience."

"Just as described, and wonderful hosts - so kind, thoughtful and helpful. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent in both value and quality. The rooms were so comfortable and spotless. This was a truly wonderful find, and is justifiably very popular. We will be visiting again!"

"We had a perfect one night stopover in Casa de San Clemente, starting by cooling off with a beer, and a splash in the pool after visiting Trujillo. Trujillo is the most delightful town we visited in Spain. Martin made an excellent light dinner, which was lactose and gluten free, as we had asked in our booking. (20€ ea. incl wine). The room was brand new in an annex, overlooking the garden. It lacked charm, but was large, a/c, and comfortable in every way. For breakfast Martin had found gluten free bread and soya milk, and of course, fresh fruit from the garden. Martin and Claudia are excellent hosts, and gave us the good feeling of staying in a family home, but without intruding. The price for a room with breakfast for two adults was 70€"
