The
Experience

This early 19th-century townhouse is in an atmospheric village in the heart of the Jerte Valley and you’re just a short stroll from the sleepy square, the river and a couple of restaurants. Sisters Marta and Alicia live with their dog Gilda in a different area of the house but are on hand

It’s peaceful here with books and magazines in the library, a fireplace in the sitting room and a terrace with stunning valley views. Most of the rooms have small balconies too. Breakfast includes local hams, cheeses, yoghurt, cereal and seasonal fruit, plus a just-baked tart or cake.

Hike in the Garganta de los Infiernos Natural Park, and walk to beautiful natural pools in an hour. Your hosts can put you in touch with an adventure company who will pick you up for mountain biking, kayaking, canyoning or horse-riding.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is in the village of Jerte, in a valley with cherry trees and deep forests that's popular with Spaniards. The village square and river is a two-minute walk away, and you can walk to a couple of restaurants in five minutes but for a better selection, plus shops, drive to Plascensia (35 minutes). When the trees are blooming (usually from the last week of March until the last week of April) there are many local activities and fairs. You can also visit the farms and help with the harvest.

Local points of interest from Marta Barrasa

  • Only five minutes walk from our House a beautiful hiking way to Los Pilones, one of the most amazing spots in The Valley. In warm weather a swim in a natural pool with crystal clear water will be the highlight of your walk.
  • For Bird lovers a drive to Monfragües National Park is a must .Black Vulture, Imperial Eagel, Black Stork, Eagel Owl as well as Swifts, Redstart and Swallows are to be seen, a delight for the senses. Many hiking routes are also to be explored.
  • In 1556 Charles I of Spain and V of Germany retired to Yustes Monastery where he decided to lead a monastic life. Not longer than one hour drive will take you to pay a visit to such an historic building. The German Cemetery is nearby, worth the visit.
  • Plasencia, Ávila or Salamanca, wonderful cities, the perfect schedule for a day trip.
  • Walk through the campus of the oldest university in the Hispanic world in Salamanca, admire best kept medieval walled enclosure in Ávila or visit the two cathedrals Plasencia.

Introducing

Marta Barrasa

Marta and Alicia – who are fluent in English, Italian and German – left their jobs in Madrid and Hamburg to accomplish their dream of living in a quiet place surrounded by nature. When they found the house, they decided to start their new life here and completely refurbished it in 2017.
