The Experience

A little gem of a place with energetic owners who care passionately for the land and their community. Two 100-year-old buildings share a courtyard – the owners live in one and your B&B bedrooms are in the other; all around you is woodland and total peace. There’s a communal dining and seating area for guests with a wooden bar which is also used for breakfasts of cooked garden apples with cinnamon, local yogurt and cheeses, freshly baked bread and homemade jams. Sietske and Tariq have four cats, two dogs and two horses – they also manage the land based on permaculture-inspired principles. The garden has plenty of places to sit in the sunshine among trees, bushes and flowers, beyond is the paddock for the horses and a vast lake which you can walk around under ancient oaks. Beamed bedrooms have recycled furniture and the walls are adorned with fine art photographs; bathrooms are small but functional. Vegetarian meals or light tapas can be booked in advance and there are plenty of places to eat just a quarter of an hour away. Lugo is 45 minutes and the Ribeira Sacra wine region is a 30-minute drive away and well worth exploring.

Delightful place off the beaten track with delightful hostess. Perfect breakfasts featuring fresh orange juice, muesli and a fantastic local honey with home made bread and coffee. the suggestion to visit Luga proved a very good one, and referral for our evening meal to the hotel across the lake produced scrumptious fresh langoustines.

In June we stayed for in Casa da Cabaza for a week. Everything was what we hoped for: a beautifull and comfortable old house in a rural, quiet environment and Sietske as the entertaining hostess. She knows the region well and did perfect sugestions for interesting places to visist. We also have to mention the delicious breakfasts she served

The last place in a hamlet beside the lake, this is the ultimate in peace and tranquillity. Siets gave the warmest welcome, helped by glorious sunshine, and the beautiful surroundings. It is a joy and honour to share their home in this rural idyllic setting. The rooms are light, clean and comfortable with examples of Tariq's artwork on the walls. There are places to sit in sunshine or dappled shade or to watch the moon rise over the hills in the evening. Breakfast was made from fresh local produce including home baked bread fresh from the oven. We'd love to visit again - hopefully soon.

We had such an amazing time at Casa da Cabaza that it is hard to do it justice with words. Our hosts were attentive, interested and interesting and their place so beautiful. Our bedroom was most romantic with peaceful views over the other buildings ,the land, the horses and the lake. It was a true treat to stay there, eating superb breakfasts, swimming in the lake and and exploring magnificent Galicia. We are planning to visit again!

Local points of interest from Sietske Meerloo

  • While staying at Casa da Cabaza, you can disconnect from your busy life. Unwind and relax in our tranquil gardens, spend your time reading or writing, go for walks around the lake or more energetic forest hikes directly from our gate.
  • Within an hour's drive are the cities of Lugo and Ourense. Lugo is famous for its intact Roman walls that one can walk on, circling the old town. Ourense, a medieval city to the south, offers relaxing thermal springs on the banks of the river Miño.
  • While staying with us, don't miss discovering the Ribeira Sacra. The wine growing terraces cling to the banks of two magnificent rivers, the Sil and Miño, and were originally built by the Romans. Great wine and fabulous views guaranteed.
  • Activities in the area close by include: swimming and sun bathing along the river beaches, horse trekking, walking the numerous forest trails, mountain biking, golfing and more.
  • Casa da Cabaza is perfectly located to explore the Courel mountains (wonderful hiking and gorgeous views) as well as the As Ancares bioreserve (home to the brown bear and the wolf). Late summer birdwatching here is wonderful.
  • The famous Camino de Santiago runs just 20 minutes north from our bed and breakfast and you could walk a day (or two or more) of this famous pilgrim's path.
