Hotel la Serena

Altea, Alicante

A spot of luxury, and good design, in a modern hotel for grown-ups only. Walk to the beach and shops, be pampered in the wellness centre

12 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

In what was the pretty old village of Altea (now surrounded by tourist developments), is La Serena – a new building, made to look old. This is sophisticated and will suit those who hanker after the ’boutique’ hotel experience. Its new young owners have decorated it in a warm modern style guided by the idea that everything works and service comes first. Not the smallest detail has been overlooked, from an array of sockets for adapters at your desk to subtle floor lighting to the underground wellness centre. Bedrooms are minimalist but not stark: white walls and industrial grey floors, a textured timber headboard, a thick plank as a writing desk, French windows to a terrace in the suites – and the waves crashing on the pebble beach half a mile away. Communal spaces are just as subtle and stylish, materials and finishes are impeccable, the small pool sits on a patio with seating and it is all done with dedication to your comfort. Benidorm’s sandy beach is just down the road;  this coastline is built up, there’s no getting away from it, but head for the hills and you’ll find unspoilt villages worth exploring.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Guy Preem

  • Traditional fruits & vegetables market on Tuesday, two streets away: a perfect occasion to mingle with locals looking for the best tomatoes or peaches. Nearby, the artists nest: painters, sculptors, artisanal things to admire and buy, art galleries.
  • 5 minutes from the old and famous Church of the town: you can assist a mass and be part for some minutes of the religious life of the village, nice to see everybody shaking hands and give each other the traditional ¨peace¨, a Catholic custom.
  • The image from the Main Square, right in front of the Church is fabulous, either you look south or north, you have a spectacular perspective. You can enjoy a full image of the mountains and the sea, and also the villages in the proximity.
  • Enjoy the wonder of the waters around here: bathing in the crystal clear water of the sea, sailing and seeing the dolphins, snorkeling, jet-sky, paddle surf, diving. At 10km, you can find the best waterpark from all Europe and also an attraction park.
  • Terraces and restaurants for you to taste the best Spanish wine and have a typical plate of jam and cheese, with bread and olive oil.
  • Visit a wine cellar and have a tasting of authentically Spanish wines, made for the pleasure of the palate and the joy of the spirit (The cellar Enrique Mendoza is well known for the good and tasty tradition in the field).
