Trevalsa stands at the top of a cliff with sea views stretching far and wide. In summer life spills into the garden, where you can loll about in deck chairs and fall asleep in the sun. Explorations wait, too. You can nip down to a sandy beach or pick up the coastal path, which passes at the end of the garden; turn left for cliff walks or right for Mevagissey, an old fishing village of mazy lanes. Don't stray too far. Trevalsa is a treat: friendly, stylish, gently spoiling. Inside, the view is weatherproofed by an enormous mullioned window in the sitting room, a great place to watch a storm spin past. You'll find a small bar with colourful art, then a panelled dining room for tasty food, perhaps mussels steamed in Cornish cider, a bavette steak with a peppercorn sauce, treacle tart with brown bread ice cream. Bedrooms have warm colours, crisp linen, padded headboards, the odd wall of paper. Most have sea views, bigger rooms have sofas, all have excellent bathrooms, the suite has a private deck. Breakfast is served on the terrace in summer. The Lost Gardens of Heligan and St Mawes are close.

"Our stay at Trevalsa Court was a real treat. The room was large and light, the food was sublime, the clifftop setting spot on and John and his team thoroughly looked after us. Next time I just hope the sun will join us! "

"The Trevalsa Court Hotel provided a beautiful place to escape the typical August bank holiday cliches of holidays in Cornwall - lots of tourists, the hotel was full of guests without feeling busy, and the weather - the view from our room of the coastline was superb. Very welcoming staff, pretty garden and terrace, good breakfast, and comfortable rooms. My second stay there thanks to Sawdays and look forward to a return! "
