Families, couples, walkers, dogs – all are welcome on the family estate, rich in tradition and country peace. Views sweep south to Dartmoor

Little wonder the Fursdon family has farmed here for 23 generations. It's beautiful – hugged by glorious Devon countryside near Exeter. Stroked by flowers, wisteria and sunshine, the mellow stone gardener's cottage rests privately in a 750-acre estate. Climb the terraced garden and flop under a sweet chestnut, drinking in views that sweep over the family manor to Dartmoor. Relax inside by the log-burner, or in a snug where bright armchairs hug you and never let you go... You cook in a well-equipped kitchen facing the living room, and eat at a pine table with six wheelback chairs. Sky-blue curtains blend with Farrow & Ball colours and pretty cushions; Catriona knows how to make guests feel at home. In warm, pastel bedrooms, wake in a soft pine bed to light glimmering through blinds – and a dawn chorus or a mooing cow. This place was made for walkers, with space for muddy boots and well-behaved dogs allowed. Stroll to iron-age Cadbury Castle, discover quaint villages, farm shops and foodie pubs, and dig deep into history: on open days, you can tour the manor and family museum.

Local points of interest from
Catriona Fursdon:

  • Fursdon Cottage has spectacular views and you can walk out into the countryside from the front door but we give you lots more information in your folder about where else to walk (with or without the dog).
  • Just down the road in Bickleigh is Mid-Devon's only vineyard, Yearlstone. A visit here is always rewarding and they have a great little cafe for lunch or afternoon tea.
  • The vibrant city of Exeter is a short drive away with great shops - everything from John Lewis to little boutiques tucked away down side streets and a trip to the Quay is an added treat. Try the querky Jolly Roger for a super Cream Tea.
  • Exeter's history is longer than Fursdon's! The 11th century Cathedral is a must and in Nov & Dec there is an open air Market on the Cathedral Green. Red Coat guides offer walking tours of all the best and most historic areas.
  • Dartmoor with its Tors is wonderful but try exploring Exmoor, where the heather topped moors, rivers and valleys tumble down to the dramatic north coast. A little further west it settles down to the sandy surfing beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe.
  • As well as Fursdon's own historic house being open in the summer we have two lovely National Trust houses within a 20 minute drive. Killerton House with its costume displays and Knightshayes Court with its Gothic splendour are well worth a visit.
