Bang on the water for ferries to Dartmouth, a steam train which whistles past, boats bobbing, dreamy views and a quirky little space

Read guest comments

Drive down a steep road towards the Higher car ferry that sweeps passengers over to Dartmouth - and just before you hit the river turn sharp left for a slice of watery bliss. The steam railway line is bang in front of you (busier in summer) and then the estuary with its bobbing boats and constantly changing light. Walk in to a relaxed, seaside feel with interesting vintage trinkets dotted about, ships lanterns for lampshades, striped cushions and local artwork on the walls - a little table sits under the window so you can carry on staring while you eat. Stone floors are warmed by underfloor heating and a tiny kitchen has all you need for holiday cooking; handcrafted cabinets hold the basics. The bedroom has antique French furniture, beams and a big bed with a view; the shower room is tiny and quirky with an old boat sail as a curtain and upcycled loo and sink. Best of all you have 50 metres of private riverside walkway with benches and a swing seat from which to take it all in. Dartmouth's gems are a two-minute ferry ride away (the owner leaves you a passenger card), but this, the sunny and serene side, will keep you in its grasp.

  • Arrive, park and be car free for the remainder of your stay @ the QuerQuay Bolthole. A rare feature of this area where parking is notoriously difficult. Instead travel around the beautiful South Hams on the ferries, steam trains and buses on your doorstep.
  • Dartmouth is a 2 minute ferry ride across the river. Explore the narrow lanes of this beautiful historic town - full of restaurants, cafes and stylish independent shops. Peruse the numerous art galleries or enjoy The Flavel Art Centre for theatre & cinema.
  • Beaches on the doorstep ... Blackpool Sands and Slapton Ley are near by - further afield is Salcombe, Bantham and Bigbury beaches where you can walk the causeway to Burgh Island. Along the coastal roads find fabulous eateries offering fresh local food.
  • QuerQuay is a walker's paradise- meander along the river path to meet the steam train at Kingswear, visit Agatha Christie's home Greenway via the scenic Long Woods or head off along the stunning South West Coast Path which literally passes your front door.
  • Dartmouth is renowned for stylish food and is home to some fabulous chefs including Mitch Tonks of The Seahorse. Dartmouth Food Festival in October is an annual event not to be missed. Daily you can enjoy wonderful food from the local bakeries and delis.
  • Activities abound on the river so you can gear up for canoeing and kayaking, wildlife tours around the coast, paddle boarding, sailing or cookery classes at Manna. Wind down at one of the cosy pubs or enjoy a great meal in one of our acclaimed restaurants.
