This is one of those lovely inns that operates as the village sitting room - well-kept ales, local food and cute rooms wait

This 16th-century inn is adored by locals and visitors alike. It's a proper inn in the old tradition with gorgeous rooms and the odd touch of scruffiness to add authenticity to its earthy bones. It stands on a cobbled walkway in a village lost down tiny lanes, and those lucky enough to chance upon it leave reluctantly. Inside there are beams, but they are not sandblasted, red carpets with a little swirl, sofas in front of an open fire. Boarded menus trumpet irresistible food – carrot and orange soup, haunch of venison with a port jus, an excellent rhubarb crumble. You can eat wherever you want: in the bar, in the fancy restaurant, or out in the walled garden in good weather. There's a cobbled terrace, a skittle alley, maps for walkers and well-kept ales. Upstairs, seven rooms have a chic country style. Two have baths in the room, those in the barn have painted stone walls, the suite has a wood-burner and a private terrace. All are lovely with comfy beds, white linen, good power showers and flat-screen TVs. Kind staff chat with ease. Dartmoor waits, but you may well linger. Brilliant.

"I dont think I can elaborate much on the review other than to say it accurately descibes my experience at the Lamb. I was going to stay 3 nights but it ended up a week. The pleasure was not just the pub itself of course but the staff and the locals. Friendly, warm, great food and drinks well priced for what you receive. Hope one day I get the opportunity to return. Thanks to all those at the Lamb who made my stay the highlight of my time in the UK."

"It's just the best pub out there. The standard is always good, there are sofas by the fire, friendly staff and it's everything every pub should be."

"I would like to let you know of a really nice weekend (22-24 October) we had at the Lamb Inn, Sandford. Seven of us were down there for a long weekend and we all agreed the rooms were lovely and the food – dinners and breakfasts - were very good too. The pub is genuinely old and has a really friendly and warm ambience. It gets the balance right between being a pub and restaurant – a tricky one to pull off. The owner and his team were very helpful, cheerful and efficient – coping with several changes to our bookings which I had made over the previous days with calmness! Overall a very positive experience and I would happily go back, and recommend it to friends."

"Just back from a 2 day stay at The Lamb. It is a perfect combination of busy village pub full of friendly people, and stylish bedrooms. The food was excellent both at dinner and breakfast. Service was efficient and charming. We feel we have discovered a real gem to which we shall certainly return."

"Feb 2011 just back from the Lamb , which really is as good as others have said. A British Inn warm, welcoming, and full of character and characters - we hope to become regulars if our daughter goes to Exeter Uni"

"We spent 2 excellent nights at The Lamb Inn. The room was lovely and the bed very comfortable. We enjoyed eating in the the bar in the evening, the food was superb, we recommend the steak! The pub had a lovely village atmosphere and if we are in the area we will certainly stay again."

"We spent two nights at this fabulous pub. The pub was very popular with locals of all ages, was warm and welcoming with friendly staff, a toasty fire and plentiful newspapers. Our evening meals were chosen from a small but locally sourced menu and very well priced. The food is served in the pub and not a separate dining room which we liked so we could see what was going on and enjoy the atmosphere. The wine was also good value. Our room was spacious and well furnished with a wonderful shower. The breakfasts are great and set you up for your sightseeing, shopping or walking. We thought the landlord had it spot on with atmosphere, price, rooms and conviviality and certainly one of the best we have stayed in."
