The Experience

Temple Lodge, once home to the painter Sir Frank Brangwyn, is sandwiched between a courtyard and a lushly landscaped garden. The peace is remarkable making it a very restful place – simple yet human and warmly comfortable, a nourishing experience. Alicja and a devoted team run it with quiet energy. Breakfast is a help yourself buffet of Rude Health cereals, plant based milk and yogurts, poached or boiled eggs, tomatoes with chives. Vegans are also catered for.

There are three very smart new garden rooms and the rest are in the main house. Views from all windows are green, exceptional in central London and next door is The Gate Vegetarian restaurant, at which guests get a 15% discount. You’re welcome to find a spot to sit in the garden by the tinkling fountain or pick up a book and read in the extensive library.

The Thames passes by at the end of the road, Riverside Studios is round the corner for theatre and film.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

Reviews

If you need to stay in London but you don't want to pay ridiculous prices then this is the place for you. It's also a peaceful oasis with a lovely garden, near to everything with excellent tube and bus links to central London and the West End. Walks down by the river are peaceful and green, the vegetarian café next door is very good indeed.

This Hammersmith Guest house is a real find. It has a lovely breakfast included and the staff are lovely. If you are looking for a B & B in Hammersmith (or a B & B near Hammersmith) I would 100% recommend. It is only a few minutes walk from the tube and the Hammersmith Apollo. I stayed in the garden room located in their beautiful gardens, it was so lovely and quiet, a little bit of chilled out paradise in the centre of London! I have stayed in so many 5* hotels in London but now that I have found this gem of a guesthouse in Hammersmith I would never stay anywhere else.

Miranda, Wells

I love this place. It is attractive, welcoming, peaceful, wonderful value and delightfully modest - even old-fashioned. Some of the rooms are as elegant as one could wish for; others are more functional but still good value. The new garden rooms are well designed and built. But above all I like the fact that one's money supports the pursuit of reflection, peace and love in our despairing society. Lastly, the chapel is a haven of silence, and the Gate restaurant one of London's finest. Special indeed, for many reasons.

Alastair, Bristol

I had a lovely stay at the Temple Lodge Club. My room was small and cosy an had everything I needed. Very comfortable bed and duvet had me sleeping like a log. The shared bathroom was just down the hall. The Temple Lodge Club is an oasis of calm in the middle of bustling Hammersmith. The garden is a lovely place to relax. A good, healthy breakfast is served every morning. Lovely, friendly and very helpful staff. I shall return!

Anna, Gothenburg

My favorite place to stay in London, very welcoming, peaceful and beautiful! Nice rooms overlooking a lovely garden, and excellent breakfast. Thank you for your friendly welcome always!

Claire

The ideal London retreat - convenient, quiet, friendly, homely rooms with clean shared bathrooms (some en suite I believe), good simple organic breakfast overlooking the beautiful walled garden. Great value. River walks & great food options nearby (NB the excellent vegetarian restaurant in the front garden! Also The Dove for great fish & chips overlooking the river). I will return often.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're bang in the middle of Hammersmith, a two-minute walk from the tube for Victoria Line, District and Central. Hammersmith Bridge is now open to pedestrians and cyclists and it's a short walk to good pubs, galleries, shops and theatres. On the other side of the river it's a bit greener: walk on Barnes Common or visit the London Wetlands Centre. The Apollo venue is just over the road for music.

Local points of interest from Alicja Fediow & Peter Van Breda

  • You’re so close to Hammersmith Bridge with very good pubs on the banks of the Thames for a pint; watch the rowing clubs prepare to power along the river; and even visit William Morris' House if you choose the right day.
  • There’s a lovely loop along the Thames, up to Putney Bridge one side, part of the Thames Path - then back the other,it takes about an hour and a half, though the odd pub may delay you.
  • On the far side of the Thames - the Surrey side in boat-race speak - you’ll find the marvellous Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust - bird watching in the city when you hardly realize your in it!
  • Around the corner - literally - you’ll find the Riverside Studios, one of London’s artistic hubs, brilliant for film retrospectives, theatre and exhibitions, even the odd musical. You don’t need to be a member, just spin round and see what’s on.
  • A five-minute stroll along the river will take you the famous River Café. OK, it’s probably going to set you back about £65 each, but it’s a great little place and worth a splash out on big occasions.

Introducing

Alicja Fediow & Peter Van Breda

In 1961, the house was taken over by The Christian Community. Besides opening their doors for visitors to Temple Lodge they are endeavouring to keep alive a feeling for the history and architecture of the building itself. Its listing by English Heritage acknowledges this legacy. Alicja meets and greets - she came here 17 years ago for a temporary job and has never left.
