Angelique offers you simple TV-free bedrooms in her listed manor house five miles from Whitby - with wondrous views of headland and sea

Arrive and listen: nothing, bar the wind in the trees and the odd seagull. The eye gathers glimmering sea and mighty headland, the final edge of the moors... are there still smugglers? This old listed house smells of polish and flowers, the drawing room breathes history. Angelique is a delight and has furnished it all, including TV-free bedrooms (one downstairs), with an eclectic mix of old and new; wonky walls and creaky floors add to the atmospheric feel. She's hung contemporary art on ancient walls and made a veg patch with young Phoebe. David helps out with simple breakfast when he's not globetrotting. The very opposite of stuffy.

  • A quick fifteen minute walk through the gardens, down the old railway line and a footpath takes you straight to Robin Hood's Bay beach . . . lovely!!

"I have just returned from a three-night stay, and it was fantastic. Angelique's the soul of that place. She's a wonderful host. Elegant, welcoming, polite. I plan on going back to finish the Yorkshire execution of a personal project. After being at Thorpe Hall once it's hard to be in the area but not there. I'd like to add that all Thorpe Hall members were great and gracious."
