Roll out the Scrabble in this adorable fisherman's cottage above the harbour at Crail. Perfect for 2 couples, and great fish 'n chips nearby

This immaculate fisherman's cottage just above exquisite Crail's harbour gives you a warm hug of a welcome. Views from the pretty garden stretch over rooftops to the Firth of Forth; bliss to eat out here on a summer's day. Inside is perfect: cool colours and pretty objets run throughout, while plump armchairs and sofa front the gas-fired stove; roll out the Scrabble, choose a DVD. The ground floor is open-plan with a Shaker-style kitchen that holds all you need, and a dining table for four. Upstairs are two bedrooms, not huge but stylish, with thick mattresses, crisp linen, lovely quilts – and a smart bathroom between them. Small but beautifully formed, No 21 would suit close friends or a family, or a couple of romancers. Beach towels and flasks are at the ready... stroll down to the Lobster Store, a wooden hut on the harbour wall that sells just-caught lobster and crab – Crail once supplied London with 20,000 lobsters a year! There are several fish restaurants here, and the best fish and chips in Scotland at Anstruther. Head off for golf along the coast (St Andrews is close) and handsome Edinburgh – under an hour. A real gem.

  • Fife is the home of golf with fifty courses including the Old Course at St Andrews (9 miles), Crail's own Balcomie, laid out by Old Tom Morris, and spectacular Kingsbarns, 3 miles away.
  • Scotland's best fish and chip shop at Anstruther. (10 minutes drive or an hours walk along the coastal path)
  • The stunning coastal path linking the fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife and beyond. (The path runs right past the cottage)
  • Fantastic restaurants both posh and not nearby including Michelin-starred The Peat Inn and our favourite, the unpretentious East Pier Smokehouse & Cafe; or just pop down to Crail harbour - 1 min walk - and get a lobster cooked to order.
  • Nearby St Andrews with its ruined cathedral, Scotland's oldest university, spectacular West Sands (of Chariots of Fire fame), great gourmet shopping, and just beyond, Tentsmuir Forest home to eagles, red squirrels and on the beach, lots of seals
  • Fresh local produce in the village and at nearby farm shops including Ardross Farm Shop, named Farm Shop of the year 2014.

"My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay at 21 Shoregate for a week in early October. Such a delightful, cozy, beautifully decorated cottage in one of our favourite places, Crail in East Neuk Scotland. The whole experience, from booking onwards was a pleasure. The cottage is in amazing location in the centre of Crail close to the charming ancient harbour and would suit a visit any time of the year. The lovely back garden is a lovely place to spend time while enjoying the view of the North Sea and the Firth of Forth. It is so easy to explore Fife, including St. Andrews. A perfect spot."

"Our 2nd visit, the house is beautiful and very well equipped. Perfect position very quiet and easy to park. House is very comfortable and cosy. Brilliant location to unwind, local cafes, pubs and shops all very close by. Footpaths to explore the coast and easy walking and nicely spaced between villages which are all charming."

"This is an exquisite place to stay. We've been twice and would happily stay forever. Each visit was in the depths of winter and it was a perfect place to simply lie low. We walked quite a bit and thought about dining in some of the superb restaurants nearby but in the end opted to stay and dine indoors. It's also a perfect spot to do some writing and reading. Or that rarest of things - time to think, and simply be. "
