Wilderness, luxury and inspiration combine at these 2 eco dwellings with lake and mountain views. Heaven for couples in search of solitude

A breathtaking combination: cutting-edge design and uninterrupted views across water and mountain. These two highly individual, luxurious boltholes, one on the shore, one built into the heather-clad hillside, are labours of love for the owners and carbon negative too, with sheep's wool insulation, local Douglas fir, solar collectors, a wind turbine. Step in to find beautifully upholstered furniture, wood-burning stoves, sleek kitchens, state-of-the-art sound systems, baths big enough for two. The Hill has sliding glass doors, a bed of leather and lacquered steel, an outdoors bath on a patio overlooking the sea. The Shore bring outdoors in with an open-plan kitchen/dining area off a view-filled terrace, a big feather-topped bed, custom-made rugs, ceramics by Lotte Glob. Tempting to stay put, but do venture forth: to Britain's largest accessible limestone cave, Smoo, and its naturally lit waterfall. In high summer you may play a round of midnight golf, with porpoises in the bay for company. The beaches are stunning and unspoiled, the walking is sublime... for romantics who want to be alone, it doesn't get better than this.
