Delicious dinners on a sun-splashed veranda, a plunge pool in the hillside garden, English hosts who value simplicity, style, and good food

Read guest comments

The exuberant hillside garden, full of blossom and bamboo, has gorgeous views of sunflowers and an overflowing stone plunge pool. John and Jane's talents are a restful atmosphere, great dinners, and interiors that are a brilliant marriage of cottage simplicity and sparks from African throws and contemporary paintings. Beautiful bedrooms have a separate entrance. Delightful, energetic Jane offers superb, imaginative food in the sun-splashed veranda with its all-season views, or the bright, rustic dining room with roaring log fire – and early suppers for children. Lovely people in a tranquil view-drenched spot.

"We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Pauliac. Thank you very much, Jane and John, for a few relaxing days at your house: the crisp white Bergerac wine on arrival in your beautiful garden, the delicious meals, the fresh flowers in your tasteful rooms, tea on the terrace after our day excursions ... We will recommend you to all our friends and hope to be back one day."

"Our fourth visit to this lovely B&B. John and Jane are the best hosts, the food is superb and the setting very peaceful. We have never failed to enjoy our time here, meeting good company over dinner or over a glass of wine in the beautiful garden overlooking the valley. A true retreat ."

"Jane and John provide an outstanding B & B in a 4 house hamlet nestled in a beautiful setting with sweeping views of the countryside. They have been greeting guests for over 2 decades and have honed a style that is friendly and relaxed and most comforting to travelers. After so many years in residence, they know what best to see and where best to go for just the right experiences. When staying for one night or more, you should treat yourself to dinner at their table. Jane is a marvelous cook offering up local, fresh fare. In her hands from her kitchen, a chicken and vegetables becomes a feast."

"We stayed at Pauliac for three nights and had the loveliest of holidays. The rooms were very tastefully decorated, the hosts (John & Jane) were superb and the food was 5 star!!!! We arrived quite stressed from various things going on in our lives and left with lots of cooking tips and the precious gift of serenity. We will be back!!!"

"Warm, friendly and welcoming, Jane and Jonny create an atmosphere of a home away from home. The meals prepared by Jane are always a delight, with something for everyone and the experience of high quality restaurant cuisine without having to actually get dressed up to go out to one. I live and work in London and experience levels of stress that come with this - I came back to London after spending 8 days with Jane and Jonny and felt a lot better for it! "

"Lovely place and people! We loved our stay at Pauliac. The rooms are decorated with great taste, the view and the garden are marveilous. Jane and Jack are the kindest hosts ever, offering valuable advices about what is to see arround and Jane is one of the best French cook. She has an amaizing sense for delicius food. I took some cooking lessons with her and I consider one one of the best moments of my holliday. We will come back at Pauliac to discover the rest on Bordeaux. Thank you both! Claudia & Mihai"

"Very relaxing place to stay, with wonderful hosts and delicious food. The nicest thing was asking to stay for dinner and then having the most delicious surprise from superbly cooked food and local wines of excellent quality - oh, and the dog and cats were lovely too!"

"We arranged to stay for five nights, and learn Perigordian cooking at the same time. Jane was a superb teacher, despite being English! Her 22 years in the Dordogne had been well spent, soaking up the local food lore, which she dispensed willingly to her tyro pupils. Dinner began at 8-ish, and lasted all evening, thanks to eclectic, intelligent and appreciative fellow guests. On our last night we catered for 12, with Jane and John doing the serving so we could relax and enjoy the fruits of our joint effort."

"Jane and John made us very welcome from the moment we arrived at their full of character home. We were invited to join some of their friends at dinner on the first of our two nights and learnt more about the Dordogne in one evening than we had from various guide books. Jayne is a superb cook and the evening meal with wine is excellent value. She also suggested good local sights to visit, all equally characterful and intriguing. Wished we had booked more nights."

"We'd only booked our first 3 nights of our fortnight's stay in France, and were incredibly lucky to stumble across Pauliac b & b. So lucky because it's beautifully decorated, we had a gorgeous garden view, fabulous dinners, and hosts who couldn't be nicer and more helpful in a practical and relaxed but totally reliable way. Lovely big dining room/lounging around area, clean room, and from our bed we could look out of the window at the stars that splashed the clear night sky. We'd have happily stayed longer."

"We spent the last two nights of 2010 in this idyllic place. John and Jane are perfect hosts. A roaring fire was lit for us when we arrived and when we returned from a walk the following day. We had the pleasure of Jane's fabulous cooking on both nights. They have two beautiful, friendly dogs, Dan and Pilot, who are completely adorable. If you are looking for good food, great company, peace and relaxation then Pauliac is for you."

"Spent a wonderful 6 nights here, John & Jane are perfect hosts and we were made to feel very welcome, If you stay here then you must book in for dinner Jane's cooking is second to none and she also taught my daughter how to make chocolate mouse! The decor is beautiful, real rustic quirky charm. Would certainly recommend."

"What a wonderful holiday we had! We stayed at Pauliac for a week. Our bedroom was extremely comfortable and well furnished, the garden with its pools, apple trees and wonderful plants was a delight,as were the various house pets, and the food (we had dinner at Pauliac nearly every night) was some of the best we've ever tasted, anywhere! John and Jane were marvellous hosts, and very helpful with recommending places to see in the region. We're definitely hoping to return before too long."
