Ascend Mount Canigou to 11 acres of vista-filled green, 2 family gîtes and 2 charming apartments for 2. Perpignan's a hop, so's the coast

Read guest comments

Birdsong, rushing water, rustling leaves... half-way up Mount Canigou, in the Mediterranean Pyrenees, this lovely old fruit farm, perfect for couples or families, stands in 11 verdant acres with dreamy views of green-cloaked mountains. Immensely restful, it makes the bumpy journey worth it. Four separate gîtes are perfect for singles, couples or families and all have their own outdoor space and terrace so you'll feel nicely private. Interiors are cool and uncluttered with whitewashed walls, simple old pine furniture, tiled floors, comfortable beds, modern kitchens and bathrooms. In cooler months you can light the wood-burners and keep toasty warm, in summer splash in the pretty shared pool with its heavenly views. Wander the lush acres around you to find rare Cameroon sheep, some Catalan donkeys and hens from which you may buy your breakfast eggs when they are laying. Simon and Ashley, busy but friendly, live in the farmhouse and know the best walks, cycle routes, the closest restaurant, café and bar (a 30-minute walk). The coast and Perpignan are good day trips, there is much to do in this area of France.

"Simon and Ashley were the perfect hosts during our wonderful stay at Can-LLouquette. If you are after an über relaxing break in a beautiful corner of France with exceptionally knowledgable and hospitable hosts, then you would do well to find anywhere more suitable than here. The setting is stunning, and both the property and the expansive grounds are extremely well maintained making it very hard to leave the place everyday. However, on the days you do want to explore, the location is ideal for accessing the mountains, the coast, and everywhere in between. There is no shortage of interesting to"

"Can Llouquette is a lovely place. We stayed with our 1 year old daughter and had a wonderful time: swimming, walking and visiting mountain villages. Perfect for coming to rest in your holidays. El Casot is a charming gîte, it had everything we needed and a beautiful view overlooking the forest of the mountain. Simon & Ashley are very friendly and warm, they gave us fantastic advice. Ashley took care of fresh bread in the morning and Simon's enthusiasm for the mountains and nature was contagious. The place felt as home and we hope to return again. We absolutely recommend it."

"We stayed at Can Llouquette with our three children for two weeks and had the most perfect holiday. The setting in the Pyrenean mountains is beautiful and the house, garden, terrace and pool were of an incredibly high standard. Additionally, everything is done in the most environmentally friendly manner possible (including the sparklingly clean pool). Ashley and Simon and their daughter were warm and welcoming and made us feel cared for and relaxed. We would love to come back and would not hesitate to recommend Can Llouquette to anyone."

"We had a wonderful week with our young family at Can Llouquette. It is a haven of tranquillity and just the place to unwind from a hectic pace of life. The view over the canopy accompanied by the sound of the brook and the birds was idyllic. Beautifully converted and furnished in an understated and tasteful way the site includes hammocks near the stream, a place to barbecue for an early evening dinner ‘en plein air’ and a gorgeous child-friendly pool, offering all the ingredients for a perfect family retreat. Ashley, Simon were consummate hosts and it gets an unreserved recommendation from us."

"For the fourth time we visited Can Llouquette and hopefully will spend future holidays in this paradise. This with love and dedication constructed place is a jewel among the individual lodgings. It is a quiet location in the vast forests, which offers a broad variety of possibilities for peace lovers, active vacationers, gourmets, cultural interested guest and families. The owners are as professional as warm and welcoming. During cold season you can relax with a book and glass of wine at a warm wood fire. On hot summer days pool and trees provide shade cooling and relaxation."

"A real gem, where you feel at home from the moment you arrive. If you remember to shop on your way up you have everything you need; peace and quiet (except from the relaxing sound from the stream), beautiful nature, hammocks along the stream, playground for the kids, wonderful pool, well-equipped "apartments" and tasteful decor in- and outside. And animails, which especially our kids appreciate. Once you get used to driving in the mountains the distances don't seem that far and there are plenty of child friendly things to do within 40 minutes drive."

"My family and I spent a wonderful week at Can Llouquette in the French Pyrenees, close to the Spanish border. It's a beautiful, tranquil place, set in a wonderful, quiet location, close to both mountains and sea. Simon, our host couldn't have been more welcoming and made the week totally relaxing and care free. The Gîte we stayed in was comfortable and well equipped, with it's own terrace and a lovely shared swimming pool."

"From the moment you drive into Can Llouquette, you know you're in for something pretty special. We arrived to a warm welcome and were quickly settled into Le Pommier, an apartment that opens out on to a lovely open view. A beautiful setting; a very high standard of accomomdation; friendly, knowledgeable and discreet hosts ... it's a lovely place to switch off and just be or as a base to explore the towns in the local area. A week just wasn't quite long enough."

"We had a lovely, relaxing week at Can Llouquette : it is a great place to unwind. It is in a valley surrounded by forests and mountains, and is very peaceful - the birdsong all around is a highlight. The fact that it is up in the mountains means that you get warm days - and cool nights, so you can sleep comfortably. There were nice walks to explore around the property and many wonderful places to visit within a short car ride. Simon and Ashley are attentive and helpful as hosts. Well worth a visit. We will return !! "

"If you're looking for the perfect combination of peace, tranquility, and natural beauty - Can Llouquette is your place. Settled in a gorgeous valley, we were able to fully relax and enjoy quality time. The property itself is stunning, with tons of space & beautiful scenery. We could not have asked for better weather, and so the pool was put to good use! Simon was a wonderful and attentive host - his insight into the region was greatly appreciated! Thanks so much, - Tom (4th June to 11th June 2016)"

"I spent 6 weeks in this beautiful location. It still has the charm of the old fruit farm that it used to be but now with the full range of modern luxuries. It is is a great location for walking in the hills and close to Perpignan and Barcelona and beautiful Spanish and French country towns. Great climate and it is good to just relax next to the pool. The host are very friendly and helpful. I can highly recommend this holiday location."

"We could not have had a more splendid vacation. Can Llouquette is exactly what we needed. The property's gorgeous surroundings are something out of a postcard. We were finally able to relax and enjoy some tranquility. Simon and his family have really created a special place in this valley. Their advice for what to do in the area was excellent, and their hospitality was great. It was sad to say goodbye! Thank you for everything, we plan to return! -D Johnson"

"My mother and I had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful location. The gite is surrounded by mountains and we had everything we needed and more. The accommodation was spotless and spacious with beautiful natural character and special personal touches from our hosts, who couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. Mum especially liked our day-trip to Spain. So grateful to Ashley and Simon for giving us such a wonderful place to stay. "

"Great stay, great time. We'll be back. My wife and I were new to the area, but we can see the attraction. We had great walks; an easy visit to a sleepy village over the mountains in Spain; awesome wine; Ceret was amazing; did I mention the awesome local wine? Very clean premises. We've still much to explore in the area, so we're planning our return. Back home, we've been buying wine from Languedoc-Roussillon where ever we can just to remind us of our trip. "

"This is a beautiful place to stay in a stunning area. We appreciated being so close to the mountains as it was easy to get to excitingly high (but reasonably easy) trails, and, at home, to be close to the animals, river and beautiful woods which surround the house. The proprietors were wonderfully friendly and laid-back, kids played happily all week and we found lots to do close by. Joyful."

"We had a very enjoyable time at Can Llouquette. The welcome was lovely, and the property itself was ideal. The play areas, streams, woods and of course swimming pool were adored by the children, and for the adults there was beautiful scenery and realxed evenings spent listening to the birds and the stream below."

"We had a wonderful time at La Bergerie, Simon and Ashley were great and very helpful hosts, the property was lovely and the setting very quiet and beautiful. It was a great base for us to explore the local area such as going for walks, visiting places of local interest and just enjoying French and Catalan life and its environs. We so enjoyed it that we have decided to come back to the area for a number of months. We would definitely come back and recommend to others."

"The description of the gite at Can Llouquette is spot on, but when you get there it seems even better and we had a fabulous time! It is well-equipped, right down to the smallest detail and is absolutely spotless and well-furnished. It is well-proportioned with a beautifully cool and stylish bedroom and a spacious living and kitchen area. The balcony is perfect; sitting outside all you can hear is the rustle of the leaves and the distant bubbling of the stream. It was absolute heaven, not a man-made sound to be heard! You can spend your time lazing on your balcony, by the pool or go wandering around the estate and explore the valley and discover the local wildlife. It was lovely just to laze around for the first couple of days, reading, eating, drinking and relaxing. Within the gite there were plenty of maps, guides and ideas of things to do both locally and further away if you want to make the effort. Simon and Ashley were more than willing to offer advice and suggestions when asked. A trip into Spain is a lovely way to spend a day or more should you wish to. You could even go and stay in Barcelona for a couple of days, something we plan to do when we return. The entire holiday was absolutely perfect; a great gite to stay in, a lovely environment to explore and plenty of interesting towns and gorgeous views to spend your time discovering along with two lovely hosts who were there when we wanted them to be. We would (and indeed have done) recommend Can Llouquette to our friends and to anyone who would enjoy such a peaceful, relaxing and fabulous place to stay. It’s one of those places that you make the holiday you want, be it a laze around reading and chatting time, a get into the car and explore everything type of holiday, a walking in the valleys and mountains trek or any combination of those or anything else that you might fancy doing and all with a lovely place to return to each evening."

"We had a wonderful week at Can LLouquette. Stunning location and Simon and Ashleigh were such welcoming hosts- nothing was too much trouble and it was lovely getting to know Sophia, their daughter. Le Pommier (the Studio)which had been sympathetically and very comfortably converted was perfect for the 2 of us with everything we needed. The terrace was a delightful place to while away hours in the sun and the swimming pool great for cooling off! We'd recommend ordering a meal on arrival day: home grown ingredients, carafe of local wine and a truly delicious meal....great way to start our holiday. We fell in love with Can Llouquette and the area - it was a real find and a perfect place to relax and wind down!"
