Take your pick from guided horse-trekking to grand banqueting, all in wonderful surroundings with traditional French flourishes

Donkeys to stroke, bicycles to hire and ponies to ride: horsey folk and families will be in clover. Surrounded by wooded parkland, the red-brick building with a limestone trim started life as a holiday house; later its ground floor was extended. In the 1950s the Cuveliers moved in, adding paddocks and a pond for swans, deeply traditional decoration with strong colours and some ornate oh-so-French flourishes. Today there are six large bedrooms for guests, with solid oak floors and rugs, bedspreads plain or toile de Jouy, and furniture in Louis XV style. Two-tone panelling graces the first-floor rooms while those above have sloping ceilings and a beam or two. Bathrooms are hotel-perfect with double basins of mottled marble. Norbert-André, who managed stud pacers in Australia, has come home to cook and does a grand job, at one convivial table, or single tables if preferred. Cheeses are local, vegetables are just-picked, banquets can be arranged. Saddle up and enjoy a guided trek – for a day or even two. Lovely friendly people, perfect peace and 15 horses to ride.

"We absolutely love this place and have returned for a weekend away with the kids more than once. It is such a warm, friendly, calm place and the kids love running around playing with the animals whilst we can relax. Norbert-Andre is an amazing host and makes you feel instantly at home - the food is wonderful and the rooms are a delight. A fab place. "

"Even though we arrived late, due to the unprecedented snow blizzards, we received a warm welcome, with drinks by a glowing log fire. A wonderful regional home cooked dinner was served in the cosy music room by candlelight, making us feel relaxed & special. We stayed in the Opale suite, which has a beautiful circular sitting room and a large very tastefully decorated and comfortable bedroom. Norbert-Andre is passionate about his chateau and this showed in the quality of the rooms, service and food. We relished our relaxing stay at Chateau Behen and would gladly return for longer."

"We stayed here with our three children and we all loved it! The Cuvelier family is extremely friendly and hospitable. The chateau is lovely, we had a spaceous comfortable family room which was large enough for the five of us, and which could be seperated in two by a thick curtain. The chateau is beautiful and everything has been done up to a high standard. Yet we felt that our three three young children were very welcome, and they loved all the animals. The evening dinner was fantastic, even our fellow guest who had just completed a 3-month Cordon Blue course thought it was great food... Norbert the owner is a fantastic host, he does the cooking and serves the food and wine himself. This is the type of place you want to come back to more than once!"

"We were handed a flier for the Château at a motorway services about 10 years ago, and finally visited it this year! It was worth the wait. Very relaxing, large comfortable room, excellent hosts, delicious candlelit dinners. We're considering returning for a few days to celebrate a birthday ..."
