The Experience

Start the day feasting on melt-in-the-mouth croissants, fruity loaves, and homemade cakes and jams. This nobleman’s townhouse, tucked behind high gates in a tranquil garden, could not be more inviting.

Lori and Gavin live in one wing, and guests in the other. 17th-century windows pull in the light, and bedrooms are irreproachable, with plump quilts, great mattresses, and views over the garden. After exploring the chateaux of the Loire – lovely Giseux, privately run, is 30km – you can look forward to a generous, delicious, three-course meal, served on the terrace in summer.

Head for Le Mans, 45km, a charming cathedral town. Go walking in the Forêt de Chandelais, 30km. Or bask on the sands of the Lac de la Monnerie, and windsurf, swim and sail. It’s a beautiful spot, a half-hour drive; take a picnic and stay all day.

Reviews

Wonderful place with the most welcoming hosts Lori and Gavin. Couldn't have been made more welcome. Beautiful rooms and excellent breakfast, couldn't ask for anything more. Right in the centre of the village / town, short walk to Chateau de Lude, restaurants, pub and everything you could wish for. Will definitely be back.

Debbie, Ingatestone

Lori and Gavin are incredibly sweet and helpful, and they've already made this well-loved, warm and friendly B&B their own. I wolfed down 3 huge slices of Lori's incredible banana bread before I knew it!

Location

The neighbourhood

This small country town, on a pretty tributary of the Loire, has its own grand chateau. The Chateau du Lude, open in summer, is a 5-minute stroll. For dining, there's L’Auberge des Iles for traditional French cuisine, and the Rose & Crown for British fish and chips. Flat cycle routes dotted with villages start from here. You can canoe from the river, play golf at Bauge, and lovely walks abound.

Local points of interest from Lori Douglas

  • 5 Grande Rue is lovely old house built in 18C. It is set in a walled garden with lockable gates close to the town centre of Le Lude. It is a lovely oasis in the town with a mature garden and secure parking.
  • We are about 150 m from the entrance to the Chateau du Lude
  • Our breakfasts include homemade cakes, yoghurts and jams.
  • We are only 40 mins drive to the Le Mans motor racing circuit
  • We have secure locked parking.
  • We are only 250m from the River Loir

Introducing

Lori Douglas

Lori is Canadian, Gavin is Scottish, and both spent their careers in the army. Looking to retire in France, they fell in love with 5 Grande Rue the moment they saw it, bought in October 2019, and opened for business two weeks later. Keen cyclists and canoers, they love the diversity of France and love meeting people.
