Sink into deep pillows and gaze on the lake from your bed: the windows are tall, the views are exquisite. Westmeath is the county of lakes, the area is spotted with fine fishing and Verity's family has lived here for ever. A trained cook with her own catering business in England, warm friendly Verity is back home to run B&B. Down a long avenue of mixed trees, with sheep-strewn fields to either side, you arrive at an elevated site and not a house to be seen. Lough Bawn House was built in the 1840s and its rooms are large, comfortable and filled with light. There's a drawing room for guests with two comfy sofas and a proper log fire, and a dining room in pale green with a big table in the middle (and a smaller one by the window for a matchless lakeside view). Homemade bread and fruit compotes feature at breakfast; at dinner: fresh vibrant dishes in Ottolenghi style, and produce glistening from the garden. After a day's walking, fishing or visiting Tullynally Gardens, what a treat to come home to a prettily refurbished bedroom, with a dressing table-set for a touch of glamour and a piping hot bath.

  • Loughcrew and Newgrange nearby - both Neolithic sites.
  • Fishing on several well known lakes in the area - daily permits available.
  • Castles and gardens to explore. Tullynally, Loughcrew gardens, Belvedere house and Fore abbey
  • Cosy dinners by arrangements by candlelight watching the sunset over the lake. Dietary needs catered for. local produce either grown myself or locally scourced
  • Lough bawn has been in the family since it was built,1820. It has wonderful views surrounded by old trees. The atmosphere of the house is gently peace, escaping from the stress of modern life.

"Wonderfully warm welcome, great food, warm fires, friendly dogs and a beautiful location. "
January 2013
"Greeted by our charming hostess Verity, we were thrilled by the stunningly beautiful setting and the view over the lake from the front of the house, a view shared from our en-suite bedroom, fit for a king & queen, very comfortable bed, and tastefully decorated. Breakfast was delicious, home-made muesli, and full breakfast , watched by one of the peacocks sitting on the window ledge outside! My wife and I have never stayed at a more beautiful place or enjoyed our, albeit rather short, stay more. "
