Marvel at the castles of Val d’Aosta, the exquisite landscapes and the chocolatiers of Turin. Return to a grand piano and birdsong

Read guest comments

Overlooking a wooded valley with the river Chiusella rushing below is a castle (abandoned for decades) that has been impeccably renovated by its owners. Accompanied by their two friendly hounds they embrace you enthusiastically, tell you the history and show you around. Santino's decorative skills suit the antiquity of the building to perfection: impressive antiques, splashes of modernity and fabrics in warm hues. Books, paintings, art magazines: all are yours to enjoy, along with a fire that smoulders from October to May. Upstairs are three suites with vast panoramas, as grand as can be. 'Battista' comes with a regally canopied bed, an antique chandelier, and two doors: one to the bathroom and pantry (coffees, teas, minibar), the other to the bedroom and study. 'Arieti', beneath great chunky rafters, sleeps a family of four in true splendor. Then there's the garden, all rare plants, statues, fountains, and six amphoras for nesting sparrows. You breakfast out here – sumptuously – in summer. A fairy tale place run by the loveliest people, and if you're lucky Santino's daughter will play the grand piano.

Santino Calderan:

  • A few kilometers from Castello in Val Chiusella is Damanhur, an eco-spiritual community, where you can visit the Temples of Humankind, an underground work of art, entirely handmade and dedicated to the divine nature of humanity.
  • Visit one of the most beautiful castles in Piedmont, Masino Castle, owned by the FAI (Italian National Trust), 15km away. It is known as the ‘Balcony of the Canavese’ due to the beautiful views from the terraces of the Morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea.
  • 7km away is the Ducal Castle of Agliè, one of the remaining residences of the great house of Savoy, consisting of more than 300 rooms spread over 4 floors, with authentic antique furniture. The park and Italian-style garden are magnificent.
  • Do not miss the Reggia di Venaria (30km away), with its marvelous Hall of Diana (designed in the mid-seventeenth century by Amadeo di Castellamonte), its solemn Great Gallery and the Chapel of Saint Umberto and its spectacular gardens.
  • Visit Ivrea, the Canavese capital and its historic sights: the Castle and the Cathedral. From the Museum of Modern Architecture, to the factory where Olivetti Typewriter was built. See the carnival with its traditional orange fight and horse show.
  • Enjoy traditional Canavese food in the local restaurants with local DOC wines made from the traditional vineyards. The Castle offers a sweet wine, il passito, produced in the vineyards of Strambinello.

"Our second time in this sumptuous mansion in two years. We stayed two nights in Batista, a huge palatial suite. The house was renovated and decorated by the owner, Santino Calderan, who is an artist and restorer, and every corner is unique and breath-taking. he is also an excellent cook and we love his breakfasts. A unique place and a great host. "

"Ideal location for a stop on the way south or for a short stay. The place is in a beautiful setting, a really interesting restored building. We stayed in the Bandiera suite, which is not as nice as the other rooms but clean and tidy. The grounds are wonderful and we enjoyed sitting outside with a glass of wine in the evening. The legendary breakfast more than lives up to expectations. Santino is a wonderful host! We will be back for the weekend."

"I selected Castello di Strambinello to stay at whilst planning our return leg from Tuscany, as I really liked the look and sound of it. We were not disappointed on arrival! Santino greeted us in a sincerely warm and welcoming way. We were a little late arriving but Santino was good enough to call a local restaurant to ensure we had a place to eat. Our room was not a room, it was an apartment! The castello has been lovingly restored and accommodation features cleverly integrated. Decor and style abound with Santino's excellent eye for detail. A fantastic place!"

"We loved this beautiful place, tucked away and peaceful surrounded by wonderful woods but very easy to find and not too far from our route from Italy to France so a perfect stop-over. Very comfortable rooms, absolutely delicious breakfast, wonderful views and such a gentle, likeable host. We will certainly return."

"We loved the Castello so much for its position, it's furnishings, decor and ambience not to mention the sumptuous breakfast eaten with our fellow guests with the wonderful sound of the grand piano played by Paola in the background. This is quite simply the most quintessential of family-owned B&Bs where everything has to be just so because the standard of hospitality the guests exoerience is fundamental to the aim and purpose of the owners. The level of endeavour, the quality of work and the exquisite beauty of the Castello are without doubt one of the best experiences a traveller can have. "

"Stayed twice, en passant, had little time to stay in the castello, or to keep Santino company, but will remedy these omissions next year! A lovely man, a lovely family and a beautiful home. Paola is charming, and played delightfully while we enjoyed the fabulous breakfast ( I am obliged to admit that the spread was photographed!). Wonderful Battista suite, but more importantly, sharing a glass with one's host, and strolling through his garden, talking about quince growing, furniture restoration, how difficult it is to find good bricklayers ....... It's not an ordinary BnB! "

"I visited Castello di Strambellino on 24th July with my family and stayed in the Bandier suite. We found owner Santino very welcoming, most hospitable and a great host. The rooms were very comfortable, beautifully furnished and were pleasure to spend time in. Breakfast was all one could wish for to suit any taste. I thoroughly recommend Castello di Strambellino. "

" A stunning Castle, magic colors, lovingly tended by the owners in every detail. I stayed in the suite Rams, and there are not enough words to describe her beauty, very very spacious, almost seemed a little House of my own, breakfast then like a real Queen. The exterior is equally fantastic full of flowers and plants seems to stand in one place."

"This was our second visit to Castello di Strambinello and it was as perfect and as lovely as the first. I agree with all the other reviewers: this is truly a very special place. Santino is charming and if you pay a visit, you will not be disappointed."

"We consider ourselves seasoned travellers, but it's the first time that the reality of a place was a thousand-fold more impressive than the photos and travellers' descriptions. It was like visiting a castle and being invited to stay the night in the King's suite. Our bedroom was the size of a flat and had a crystal chandelier. We also had a reception room, a kitchenette and a lovely bathroom. It was a heavenly mixture of old times and all the modern amenities. You'll have breakfast fit for royalty, made by the owner, Santiago, an artist by education and character. We still smell lemon trees. "

"Castello di Strambinello is a gem. The owner, Santino, provided a really warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for him. The house is gorgeous and is exquisitely furnished with antiques that he has restored and he has also created some of the pieces of modern art on display. Our room was enormous and had a beautifully appointed bathroom and small kitchenette. The breakfast was a delicious spread of freshly baked breads, meats, cheeses, a fig tart, fruit from the garden and home made jams. Santino is very proud of his work and wants his guests to enjoy it all too."

"We couldn't fault Castello di Strambinello. Santino is a perfect host; friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. He recommended a local restaurant, called, made a reservation, and arranged for a vegetarian meal not on the menu. The rooms are beautifully restored; packed full of art, antiques and books. Oh and enormous. The bathroom in our suite was also excellent. The breakfast was superb with local cheese, meats and homemade cake. We've stayed in a lot of Sawday's places and this really does match the description. Highly recommended."

"This is a really beautiful and special place. My boyfriend and I wanted a holiday in the mountains near Turin for a couple days and it was perfect for that. Santino and his daughter had many good ideas for little day trips and dinner places which truly made our stay very lovely. Definitely worth a visit."

"This is our second time staying at Castello di Strambinello. We hope to stay there many times again in the future. Santino has really created something remakable and unique. We felt like we were staying inside a living work of art. The breakfast was fit for a King ( and Queen) The welcome was very friendly and genuine. I highly recommend this place. It is more than a place to stay. It is an artistic creation. Robbie"

"As we drove through the Lombardy plain we could never imagine to find such a beautiful and restful place. The above description is quite accurate. We loved everything about the place. We stayed in the grand Battista suite, most comfortable and stunning. Enjoyed a delightful evening in the beautiful gardens with the generous and friendly hosts and yes, Santino's daughter did play the grand piano. It was magic! The breakfast was sumptuous and we were still talking about it as we drove towards Mont Blanc. We plan to return and perhaps stay a little longer."
