Stay on a vibrant wine estate with gardens, courtyards and pool; smart apartments are set back from the hubbub and the owners will charm you

Read guest comments

A clutch of 17th-century buildings – some beautifully restored, others ageing gracefully – make up this glorious wine estate half an hour from Siena. The hamlet is full of life: tractors trundle around the country lanes, estate workers throw you a cheery 'Buongiorno!' as they pass, dogs scamper around your feet on arrival. Despite the hubbub, this is a refined, relaxed place to stay. Archways, formal gardens and courtyards beg exploration, and there's a delightful pool for lazy afternoons. There's always stuff going on here too: cookery courses, wine and olive oil tasting, trips to neighbouring towns and vineyards. And if you fancy exploring on horseback you can arrange to saddle up at the stables next door. The comfortable, spacious apartments are each in a separate part of the estate; the atmosphere is of rustic elegance with antique pieces, exposed brickwork and wonderful colours on the walls – ochres, terracottas, lemon yellows. Petite, sparkly-eyed Paola throws masses of energy into everything she does; she and Vittorio are a great team and will look after you perfectly. You won't want to leave!

Local points of interest from
Paola & Vittorio Mereu:

  • Our village is surrounded by oak forests and the rolling hills of Montagnola. You can enjoy the nature riding our horses or walking along routes marked by mountain guides of the CAI
  • You're within easy reach of Tuscany (less than an hour away) and Siena (half an hour), as well as San Gimignano, whose towers embroider the skyline, and Volterra, an ancient Etruscan town, famous for its architecture.
  • Even closer are the small medieval towns of Casole d'Elsa and Colle Val d'Elsa, where symbols of the Renaissance were born.
  • Love churches and abbeys? Then Abbadia Isola is well worth a visit. Built in the Middle Ages, it was an important stage in the pilgrimage along the Via Francigena, which joined Canterbury to Rome.
  • If your passion is markets, Tuscany is home to one at least once a month. Just to mention the most famous: the antiques markets of Arezzo and Lucca (respectively the first and third Sunday of the month) and the popular and cost-effective Siena market.
  • If you prefer to enjoy the peace of our place - you can relax in a hammok under the oak in our lawn. We organise local-produce tastings or you can go for walks through the surrounding woods (with or without a professional guide).

"Bichi is situated amongst the rolling hills of Tuscany, surrounded by its own olive groves, vineyards and private pool. I cannot say enough about Paola, Vittorio and Gigliola’s hospitality. They were generous with their time and wealth of local knowledge and we spent an evening chatting and sampling their fantastic wine and olive oil, which is produced on site. Both my husband and I feel like we have made new friends. If you are looking for a place where you feel welcome, relaxed and still be situated close to fantastic lively Tuscan towns, then Bichi is perfect."

"We stayed in a 3 bedroom apartment next to the main farm estate buildings which was very rustic but had all the amenities we required for self catering. We even had a great little fireplace which came into its own as the temperatures began to drop in the evenings – great to snuggle up next to with a bottle of the Cianti from the vineyards just outside the door. The Farm estate is set in the wonderful Tuscan countryside with plenty of walking through their own vineyards and fields all with fantastic views. Can’t forget our faithful friend, Bond, the very friendly English Setter."

"We had an amazing time at Bichi Borghesi. We were 5 people and stayed in the Fattoria apartment. The estate is really beautiful and full of history. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the property and walking around in their vineyards. Paola who runs the place is absolutely lovely. She is friendly and helpful and organised wine tasting for us at their own vineyards and also at other places in Chianti. She also organised a 'cooking lesson' by Loretta who works on the estate - our best meal in Tuscany! Cannot recommend the place enough and would definitely go back."

"What a wonderful stay. Bichi Borghesi is full of history and atmosphere, the owners make you feel so welcome and full of advice on where to eat locally and they could not be more helpfull. The free wine taisting is a must, and enables you to see more of the historic private parts of the house. The farm has been in the same family for 400 years . Our appartment Cocchiere, was large and decorated with antiques, it is more faided grandure that luxurious, which suited us. We stayed in September so witnessed the red grape harvest as we had our breakfast. A lovely stay."
