The Experience

Part of a former barn alongside their large, handsome ‘maison de maitre’ in the village of Rieux-Minervois, is this smart, spacious, first floor ‘loft’, made seriously comfortable by enthusiastic, generous British owners. The sitting room has big tan leather furniture on parquet flooring, plenty of books and DVDs; the open-plan kitchen comes with the best equipment, elegant china, sparkling glasses and a long wooden dining table. Pale, pretty, carpeted bedrooms – doubles opening onto the terrace – have great beds, antique French wardrobes and top quality bathrooms with decent towels and toiletries. The partially shaded terrace with mosaic-topped table and chairs, looks onto the 2-acre garden with its fine collection of Mediterranean plants and trees – yours to wander and retreat to from the heat of the day. And there’s a super pool in a walled courtyard area, with fridge, microwave and a dining table. All this in the enchanting Minervois wine-producing area, half an hour from Carcassonne (and its airport), just 40 minutes to good beaches, close to Cathar hill-top villages and the Canal du Midi: masses to see and do in all seasons.

Reviews

Many thanks for welcoming us at the Loft; we have had such a lovely stay here. You have taken such great care to ensure that the house is as comfortable as possible for your guests, and we have really enjoyed spending a peaceful week. Your tips and suggestions for the local area were spot-on and we've had some delicious meals out, so thanks to you both! We also really enjoyed having a drink with you and exploring your next project - what an amazing house. Thanks again for making us all feel so welcome and for providing everything we needed to enjoy our time here.

A last minute search for somewhere special to stay for Christmas. Sawday’s Guide did not disappoint, and we jumped for joy when your Loft was available. Throughout the drive from Cannes, I stressed about finding a tree and decorations to make the holiday perfect. To my utter AMAZEMENT, the Loft had been fully decorated beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you so much for all your very thoughtful and generous touches. As an experienced traveller, I can assure you that exceptionally few hosts go to the same lengths as yourselves. You made our Christmas very SPECIAL and, dare I say, UNFORGETTABLE!

Lovely welcome from our hosts, Russell and Karen. Lovely gite - classy, characterful and comfortable. Delightful stay in a beautiful, less-travelled location with so much on offer for days out sight-seeing, walking and cycling. Or just lazing by the pool.

Local points of interest from Russell & Karen Secker

  • Your complimentary bathing experience by 'The White Company' includes a range of five beautiful toiletries, fluffy cappuccino towels & snuggly white towelling robes. So no need to pack these essentials which take up lots of your valuable luggage allowance.
  • Babies & toddlers are well-provided for. A soft-sided cot, baby changing / bathing centre, high chair and nest provide comfort and security in the Loft, whilst we provide a playpen by the pool so that parents can relax knowing their little ones are safe.
  • Rieux-Minervois is in the heart of the Minervois wine region. Some of France's finest wines are made here and we can arrange wine tours & personal wine tastings (degustations) with local winemakers (vignerons) many of whom make stunning award-winning wine.
  • The region was brought to prominence in Kate Mosse's 'Labyrinth' trilogy. Many of the Cathar castles and medieval villages featured in her books come to life when you explore the Cathar trail, which stretches across the contrasting Languedoc landscape.
  • Languedoc enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine each year making it an ideal year-round destination. Hot summer months are perfect for relaxing by the pool or on the coast by the Med, whilst the temperate months are perfect for exploring and sightseeing.
  • The Minervois lies between the Montagne Noire and the Mediterranean. We can arrange bike, boat and kayak hire to explore the region by land and water. Take 'le piq-niq' or stop-off at one of the many restaurants personally recommended by Karen & Russell.
