The Experience

Prepare to leave this century, detach from material cares, and join Lucy on the ‘hill of the fairy fort’ (Crocnaraw means just that). Both place and owner have an untroubled, almost ethereal quality so you may sit talking to Lucy for hours in the comforting Aga country kitchen. She took over her mother’s Georgian country house B&B in 1985 and has stamped her own character on it without changing much.

There are lovely antiques before the log fire in the big airy drawing room and afternoon tea can be arranged. Breakfast is a full Irish with organic scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages, rhubarb from the garden and homemade scones, all served overlooking the garden. Ask Lucy to tell you its history and development. It was planted by her mother in 1960, Lucy looks after it now, and decorates the house with beautifully arranged fresh flowers.

Stride out into vast areas of flowering bog, rockpools, mountains and lakes. Deeply romantic.

Bring your hiking boots, swimsuit and a good book for these are all you will need to relax and recharge in the wilderness of Connemara. Find a private cove to swim in and then meander slowly home to Lucy, enjoying the very best wild Irish moors and mountains. So many delights to sooth the senses. It is a step back from the daily grind that you will not regret. Crocnaraw is the tonic.

We had a wonderful one night stay at Lucy's home in stunning Connemara. Lucy was welcoming and helpful and really made us feel at home. The accommodation doesn't have lots of modern comforts, but that's part of it's charm and atmosphere! After an evening reading by the fire, we had a wonderful home cooked breakfast and were introduced to Beauty, her cheeky donkey. The location of Lucy's home is perfect for exploring the stunning surroundings, being only a few minutes drive from Kylemore Abbey, Cleggan, Inishbofin Ferry and the Wild Atlantic Way. Thank you Lucy for such a restful stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is hill walking paradise with mountain sheep grazing the hillsides and wild Connemara ponies munching in the lowlands. Wildlife abounds, including rare breeds like Old Irish Goats. There's an equestrian centre nearby for riding along beaches or hacking through the mountains. Kylemore Abbey and its lovely walled garden is on the Wild Atlantic Way. The nearest restaurant is Veldon's Seafarer.

Letterfrack ( 3 miles) is the nearest village. Here you will find Letterfrack Country Shop offering organic produce, deli, off-licence and lots more.
Clifden (5.5 miles) is the largest town in Connemara with lots of shopping options including, The Clifden Bookshop, Millers( Irish designer clothing), Gannon Sports, Connemara Smokehouse, and numerous handcraft shops.
Mitchell's Seafood Restaurant is an excellent family run business.
The Central Bar offers an all day dining menu with traditional music at weekends.
Lowry's Pub, iconic bar offering Irish music 7 nights a week.

Introducing

Lucy Fretwell

Lucy's mother opened the house as a B&B in the 1960s and Lucy happily continues her legacy, with particular attention given to the large garden. She has a delightfully unhurried demeanour and is very welcoming. She has a Maltese called Rocky and looks after rescue donkeys.
