The Experience

Warm, funny, self-deprecating, Lynn adores her gorgeous garden and her guests equally, giving you her undivided attention. Her highly personal house has lavender-blue woodwork, odd chairs full of personality, windows that each frame a different, glorious view: the whole effect is fresh, simple and thoroughly country. She is artistic, has lived here all her life, knows the best fishing and walking spots, and may join you in a dip in the lake across the road. Breakfast is a treat, with homemade bread, jams and organic cereals, herbal teas for every cure. In the calm of whitewashed walls, the house breathes through wooden floors, antiques, fresh wild flowers, log fires. The pretty mixed-size bedrooms have enchanting river views and robes for the corridor run to the bathroom; the walls of the huge dining room carry musical instruments, seascapes, boats and baskets (poets, artists and musicians all gather here). An impossibly cute courtyard leads to the beautifully natural gardens; paths wind past fragrant azaleas, an organic veg patch, wild rocky outcrops to bluebell woods and a well-earned hammock. Peace at its best.

Reviews

We spent 4 lovely days at the Anglers Return. Our host Lynn really took care of us and gave us a lot of great advice to visit the area.

Sandrine, Paris

This is a beautiful part of Ireland and the Anglers Return is perfectly placed to explore it. Lynn was an attentive host, providing us with delicious breakfasts and use of the self-catering kitchen. Our room and the house offered us every comfort and the garden was soothing to walk in. We loved the artistic interest of this special place to stay.

Just to say how much my wife and I enjoyed our stay in The Anglers Return Roundstone during our recent trip to Ireland. Apart from the fact it provided superb accommodation and breakfast, Lynn Hill made the visit because she is such a wonderful host.

Hugh

Wonderful hospitality, Lynn is full of information and chat. Lovely room and beautiful gardens. Great breakfast, special place. GO!

My friend Marie Duffy and I stayed with Lynn when I was living in Cheshire about 2005. We had a wonderful time and on a rainy day, we borrowed some boots from Lynn and walked to the old deserted stone church where Cromwell's men attacked the monks and they all swam across the bay to their deaths! The atmosphere was amazing and the scenery superb. We had supper in the bar at Ballynahinch Castle nearby and chatted to a fisherman who was in all the gear with his dogs and ghillie. We had dinner at the 'Vaghaun's hotel in nearby 'Roundstone' and saw the place where they made the drums.

Local points of interest from Lynn Hill

  • Roundstone Regatta (July). A weekend of curragh racing and sailing the traditional red-sailed Galway Hookers, and Irish dancing on the quay! Good opportunity for some great photography of the boats in beautiful Roundstone Bay!
  • Clifden Arts Week (Mid-Sept for 10 days). The country’s top poets, writers, actors, musicians! So much to enjoy & see, yet still time to enjoy the peace of Connemara, out of town!
  • The old Galway to Clifden Railway line passes 1 mile from the house, and is presently being opened up as the Connemara Greenway. Enjoy miles of various lakeside walks through the Ballynahinch woods and over spectacular untouched bogland.
  • At the top of the woodland garden is a private campsite with views over the garden and the river. Small kitchen shed, fresh water, electricity and a new compost loo. A heavenly spot!
  • A personal guide can be booked for guided walks in the Connemara countryside or as an excellent ghillie for all the good spots! We have our own free brown trout fishing.
  • The pretty kitchen can also be used as a tea/coffee making point. Many herb teas and snacks available.
