The Experience

It’s peaceful here: livery to the side, paddock to the rear and farmland running down to the saltmarshes of the beautiful river Dee. These courtyard cottages, adjoining but independent, were part of the cattle farm. Now they make lovely retreats in this private estate of 300 acres: step straight onto the Wirral Way. The Hayloft is upside down with bedrooms downstairs and a light airy living room under the rafters; both have neutral colour schemes and are exceptionally comfortable.

It’s a great place for children: there’s a shared lawn fenced in from the yard and private patios for barbecues on long summer evenings. Wander the estate paths and you’ll find a tennis court on the far side of the drive (bring your own rackets).

You can stroll to a good pub, watch birds within the RSPB Nature Reserve (don’t forget binoculars), or hop in the car to visit Roman Chester. Wales is only half an hour in the car for Caernarfon Castle.

Reviews

Such a great place to stay- 8 of us divided up and used both cottages and all really enjoyed our visit. The Bullpen and the Hayloft are so comfortable & spacious with everything you could need. It’s a lovely area too with great walks and places to eat nearby. Can thoroughly recommend.

Jane, Rye

After a coastal walk along the Dee Estuary, what better than to stroll back through the Backwood Hall Estate's fields to your cosy, 'French country' style holiday cottage? The Bullpen has everything you could need for a luxurious stay. So much has been thought of by the owners for the comfort of their guests. If you want to use the BBQ equipment or have a friendly game of tennis on the Hall's court, they are there for you. A very well equipped, bright cottage, where you can wake up to the sound of birdsong.

Janet, Nottingham

Our family of 4 are really happy to stay in Backwood. The place was lovely, clean and the surrounding is just beautiful! We enjoyed everyday waking up with the horses and greens. The location is very good to explore both Liverpool & around Cheshire. The owner is really nice and replied promptly to our emails.

Cindy, London

We had a fabulous weekend in the Hayloft which has been laid out in generous proportions with every comfort considered and presented with exquisite taste. Sandra and Jim are welcoming hosts. The area has plenty to do and see . The visit topped by having such a beautiful warm and comfortable retreat at the end of a day exploring. Thank you.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Hall lies on the edge of Georgian Parkgate, the only coastal resort in Cheshire. Constant silting of the river Dee over the centuries has led to Parkgate losing its position as a port but it was very popular in its heyday. Join the stunning Wirral Way Coastal Path which runs over 12 miles, from West Kirby to Hooton, through a number of nature trails. This is a cycle route too.

Local points of interest from Sandra Harris

  • Explore historical Parkgate, a short stroll from the farm. Once a thriving sea port where Lord Nelson had meetings with Lady Hamilton prior to sailing to Ireland.A jumble of Georgian buildings now housing many excellent pubs and restaurants.
  • The salt marsh bordering the farm is now an RSPB nature reserve, attracting twitchers from far and wide. So bring your binoculars and cameras! Or get on the water at West Kirby's Marine Lake. Great for dinghy or wind surfer. Courses available.
  • For the more active, the Wirral Way can be reached directly from the farm. You can walk or cycle along it or ride on the adjoining bridleway for miles in either direction. So bring your bicycle or even your horse. Full livery is available on site.
  • Fancy a game of tennis on our court, overlooking the Dee Estuary. Or golf? With over 10 courses, the Wirral is a mecca for golfing. Heswall golf course adjoins the farm and nearby is Royal Liverpool at Hoylake, venue for the 2014 Open Championship.
  • Within easy driving distance are, Ness Botanical Gardens, Liverpool's magnificent waterfront (a world heritage site), the historic walled city of Chester and Snowdonia National Park. Or for shopaholics, Cheshire Oaks and Liverpool One.
  • Simply chill out in the peaceful, cosy luxury of the Hayloft or the Bullpen.

Introducing

Sandra Harris

Sandra and Jim live in the West Wing of the Hall with their two friendly little dogs and rescue cats. The Hall was originally bought by Jim's father, and using Sandra's interior design skills – she owned an interior design shop in the centre of Chester for many years – they decided to embark on a fresh direction. They transformed two farm buildings into cosy holiday cottages before turning their attention to the East Wing of the Hall.
